Always Wanting More

DAY 1 OF 7

Made For Another World

In 1965, Mick and the boys from the Rolling Stones added a new song to our rock ‘n roll lexicon.

It began with an incredibly catchy guitar riff by Keith Richards before Jagger crooned out the words, "I can't get no satisfaction."

Who hasn’t heard that song?

Who hasn’t felt that sentiment?

Contrast that question with Paul's statement to his young protégé, Timothy: “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).

Two things are true here: 1) We all long for satisfaction; and 2) It can be found…in Christ!

This week, we will look at six areas where men struggle to find satisfaction.

If you are anything like me, you’ve experienced times of great frustration and disappointment because something that you really want, or even need, has been in too short supply; you have had to do without.

The pain is especially acute when it seems like those around you have more than enough of the thing that you are longing for.

You try, and you try, and you try, and you try, and still you can’t get no satisfaction.

I hope to offer possible antidotes to the insatiable hunger that we can experience.

Before we jump into that, though, I want to share a quote from C.S. Lewis that needs to permeate this conversation:

"Most people, if they had really learned to look into their own hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world. There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you, but they never quite keep their promise…If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."[1]

We were made for another world. Let us never forget that. Remembering will help us work through our dissatisfaction in this world and learn to truly be content.

Prayer: Lord, I am a man of desires. Some of them are noble and from You. Some of them are just my carnal nature begging for more. Help me to discern between the two. Help me to find my ultimate and overarching satisfaction in You. I don’t want to live a frustrated, dissatisfied life. I want to be content and at peace. Help me to live like You did. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflection: In what areas do you think men struggle the most with finding satisfaction? In what areas do you need help with being content?

About this Plan

Always Wanting More

Most men have experienced times of great frustration and disappointment because they feel like they are lacking something in their lives, or that others have more. So, how do we find our way to true contentment and satisfaction, regardless of our circumstances? Join us in this 7-day devotional for men, written by Tim Bergmann of Alliance Community Church in Sylvan Lake, Alberta.
