Jesus Is Coming Back
By Jake W
Today's passage is one of the hardest pieces of scripture to interpret, understand and grow from. But just like a tender steak, this scripture is worth chewing on to find the nourishment we need.
The chapter opens with Jesus responding to His disciples' marveling at the temple with a prophecy that it would all be destroyed. (Yikes)
Later, when the disciples ask when this will all take place, Jesus shares many warnings about end times.
With some digging into history, we learn that Jesus’ prophecy about the destruction of the temple unfolded in the year 70 AD.
Yet Jesus’ warnings speak beyond that to what will happen in the end times leading up to when Jesus has promised to come back as King and Judge.
(For the theology nerds, Typology: A person/event that foreshadows a greater fulfilment in the future)
So, from all this, here are the takeaways from the passage"
- God is in control - Despite how crazy our world can feel with war, disaster, financial crisis and everything else, let’s not forget who is in control. The same God that knew about the destruction of the temple is the same God that knows what is happening now and in the future.
- Be on guard - A big focus from Jesus is towards being alert to those who will lie and deceive. The best defense is to stay locked onto Jesus! Study the Bible, learn more about who God is, and grow closer to Him. Then, you can discern the truth from the lies.
- Be ready - No one knows the day or the hour that Jesus will return “to judge the living and the dead”. It could happen in 1000 years or tomorrow for all we know! So don’t delay in getting right with God by following Jesus’ instructions to repent and believe the Gospel.
