Two Ways to Find Treasure

Jesus used two different stories to describe how people discover “spiritual treasure” in Matthew 13:44-46.

The first was about a man who found a treasure he wasn’t really looking for. When he stumbled onto it, he knew it was worth giving up everything he had to make sure it was his.

A second story describes a merchant who was searching hour after hour, day after day, for one life-changing treasure. Like the first man, when he found it, he gave up all that he owned to make it his own.

Some people discover great spiritual truths accidentally and some people spend a lifetime searching for them. What best describes you or why you started this reading plan? Perhaps you stumbled across someone or something that piqued your interest. You’ve been searching for a long time for something that is truly life-changing.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at the treasure/pearl that Jesus was talking about. As we examine it together, you’ll have to decide what you do with it. Maybe you’ll see it and instantly recognize its value. Maybe you’ll see it and instantly move on. The decision is yours. If, however, you’re going to consider the value of something spiritual, why not prepare yourself spiritually for the time by saying a prayer like the one below.

Prayer:

“God, help me see what You want me to see. If there is a life-changing treasure out there, help me to recognize it. Amen.”

Explore At Your Speed:

Not everyone explores at the same speed. Some people prefer to explore in small doses of teachings with plenty of time to think and reflect in between. Some prefer to feast on as much teaching as possible. If you prefer the small doses, continue daily with this reading plan. If you want to dive in, consider reading two chapters a day of the book of Mark while continuing the reading plan. As you read ask the questions, “What is this teaching me about Jesus and/or God?” and “What is this teaching me about people and/or myself?”
