The Old Testament in 10 Days

DAY 3 OF 10

A Rescued Family

Welcome back to “The Old Testament in 10 Days.” We are exploring the overarching story of the Old Testament while introducing you to ministry partners who are here to help you understand and love the Bible. Last time, our friends at Spoken Gospel showed that God planned to fill the earth with his image and presence through the chosen family of Abraham — known by the end of Genesis as the family of Israel. God promised to give this family a land, like the Garden of Eden, from which they would grow and bring God’s blessing to all nations, including the most wicked nations.

But what happens when this family can’t bless the world because one wicked nation has overtaken them? That is where Israel finds themselves at the beginning of the book of Exodus. The evil nation of Egypt, led by their tyrannical leader, Pharaoh, enslaved Israel and other nations. Now, as this wicked family grows, they are trying to swallow up God’s blessed family. This unexpected twist makes us ask: How will God defeat the spread of evil in the world and grow his chosen people?

To help us explore that question, we would like to introduce you to a ministry partner called Streetlights. Streetlights exists to unfold the Gospel in God’s Word through creative communication so all can understand. One of the ways they do this is through a unique audio Bible that mixes the dynamic and diverse recordings of the Biblical text with modern music and beats that resonate with a global audience.

We invite you to listen to Streetlight’s recording of Exodus 12 to see how God plans to defeat the evil in Egypt and save his people. Afterward, we’ll walk through what we’ve heard.

The Streetlights recording of Exodus 12 tells the story of Passover. God instructs Israel to sacrifice a lamb and put its blood on the doorposts of their home. That’s because, in the last of the ten plagues, God would defeat evil by cutting the growth of its family tree off at the roots. Every firstborn who would not put themselves under God’s protection under the blood would die. Through this plague, God would put to death any family tree not rooted in him.

Jesus used the story of Passover to talk about his own death when he instituted the Lord’s Supper. He would be the sacrificial lamb whose blood would save all nations who find their protection in him. Jesus is growing a family that will bless the nations through trust in him.

You can now continue to today’s reading where you will see this truth again at the parting of the Red Sea. Israel is saved by trusting in God. Egypt is judged for hardening their hearts toward him. When you’re ready, the next day in the plan will introduce you to a new guide who will walk you through the next part of our journey — now that God has freed his people from an evil nation, how will he keep them from becoming evil themselves?
