 <div class="label">15</div><div class="s1">Abijah King of Judah</div><div class="p"> 1In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijah#15:1 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint (see also 2 Chron. 12:16); most Hebrew manuscripts Abijam; also in verses 7 and 8 became king of Judah, 2and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother&#8217;s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom.#15:2 A variant of Absalom; also in verse 10</div><div class="p"> 3He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been. 4Nevertheless, for David&#8217;s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and by making Jerusalem strong. 5For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to keep any of the Lord&#8217;s commands all the days of his life&#8212;except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.</div><div class="p"> 6There was war between Abijah#15:6 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac Abijam (that is, Abijah); most Hebrew manuscripts Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout Abijah&#8217;s lifetime. 7As for the other events of Abijah&#8217;s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 8And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Asa his son succeeded him as king.</div><div class="s1">Asa King of Judah</div><div class="p"> 9In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, 10and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother&#8217;s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom.</div><div class="p"> 11Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done. 12He expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made. 13He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 14Although he did not remove the high places, Asa&#8217;s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 15He brought into the temple of the Lord the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.</div><div class="p"> 16There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns. 17Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.</div><div class="p"> 18Asa then took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the Lord&#8217;s temple and of his own palace. He entrusted it to his officials and sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. 19&#8220;Let there be a treaty between me and you,&#8221; he said, &#8220;as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. He conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maakah and all Kinnereth in addition to Naphtali. 21When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and withdrew to Tirzah. 22Then King Asa issued an order to all Judah&#8212;no one was exempt&#8212;and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using there. With them King Asa built up Geba in Benjamin, and also Mizpah.</div><div class="p"> 23As for all the other events of Asa&#8217;s reign, all his achievements, all he did and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? In his old age, however, his feet became diseased. 24Then Asa rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of his father David. And Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king.</div><div class="s1">Nadab King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 25Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 26He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of his father and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.</div><div class="p"> 27Baasha son of Ahijah from the tribe of Issachar plotted against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it. 28Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and succeeded him as king.</div><div class="p"> 29As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam&#8217;s whole family. He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all, according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite. 30This happened because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and because he aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.</div><div class="p"> 31As for the other events of Nadab&#8217;s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 32There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.</div><div class="s1">Baasha King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 33In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years. 34He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.</div>

 <div class="label">39</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;Son of man, prophesy against Gog and say: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of#39:1 Or Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshek and Tubal. 2I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north and send you against the mountains of Israel. 3Then I will strike your bow from your left hand and make your arrows drop from your right hand. 4On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds and to the wild animals. 5You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord. 6I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in safety in the coastlands, and they will know that I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned, and the nations will know that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel. 8It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day I have spoken of.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up&#8212;the small and large shields, the bows and arrows, the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel. 10They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.#39:11 Hamon Gog means hordes of Gog.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land. 13All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. 14People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. 15As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, 16near a town called Hamonah.#39:16 Hamonah means horde. And so they will cleanse the land.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird and all the wild animals: &#8216;Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood. 18You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls&#8212;all of them fattened animals from Bashan. 19At the sacrifice I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. 20At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,&#8217; declares the Sovereign Lord.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them. 22From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. 23And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. 24I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob#39:25 Or now bring Jacob back from captivity and will have compassion on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name. 26They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety in their land with no one to make them afraid. 27When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations. 28Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them to their own land, not leaving any behind. 29I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, &#8220;Sit here while I pray.&#8221; 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34&#8220;My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,&#8221; he said to them. &#8220;Stay here and keep watch.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36&#8220;Abba, #14:36 Aramaic for father Father,&#8221; he said, &#8220;everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. &#8220;Simon,&#8221; he said to Peter, &#8220;are you asleep? Couldn&#8217;t you keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.</div><div class="p"> 41Returning the third time, he said to them, &#8220;Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Arrested</div><div class="p"> 43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.</div><div class="p"> 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: &#8220;The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.&#8221; 45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, &#8220;Rabbi!&#8221; and kissed him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.</div><div class="p"> 48 &#8220;Am I leading a rebellion,&#8221; said Jesus, &#8220;that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.&#8221; 50Then everyone deserted him and fled.</div><div class="p"> 51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before the Sanhedrin</div><div class="p"> 53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.</div><div class="p"> 55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.</div><div class="p"> 57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58&#8220;We heard him say, &#8216;I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; 59Yet even then their testimony did not agree.</div><div class="p"> 60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, &#8220;Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?&#8221; 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.</div><div class="p">Again the high priest asked him, &#8220;Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 62 &#8220;I am,&#8221; said Jesus. &#8220;And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 63The high priest tore his clothes. &#8220;Why do we need any more witnesses?&#8221; he asked. 64&#8220;You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?&#8221;</div><div class="p">They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, &#8220;Prophesy!&#8221; And the guards took him and beat him.</div>

Later I returned to Damascus.</div><div class="p"> 18Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas#1:18 That is, Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. 19I saw none of the other apostles&#8212;only James, the Lord&#8217;s brother. 20I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.</div><div class="p"> 21Then I went to Syria and Cilicia. 22I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23They only heard the report: &#8220;The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.&#8221; 24And they praised God because of me.</div>
