 <div class="label">25</div><div class="p">1So in the ninth year of Zedekiah&#8217;s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army. He encamped outside the city and built siege works all around it. 2The city was kept under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.</div><div class="p">3By the ninth day of the fourth#25:3 Probable reading of the original Hebrew text (see Jer. 52:6); Masoretic Text does not have fourth. month the famine in the city had become so severe that there was no food for the people to eat. 4Then the city wall was broken through, and the whole army fled at night through the gate between the two walls near the king&#8217;s garden, though the Babylonians#25:4 Or Chaldeans; also in verses 13, 25 and 26 were surrounding the city. They fled toward the Arabah,#25:4 Or the Jordan Valley 5but the Babylonian#25:5 Or Chaldean; also in verses 10 and 24 army pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his soldiers were separated from him and scattered, 6and he was captured.</div><div class="p">He was taken to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where sentence was pronounced on him. 7They killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon.</div><div class="p">8On the seventh day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, an official of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 9He set fire to the temple of the Lord, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down. 10The whole Babylonian army under the commander of the imperial guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem. 11Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the rest of the populace and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon. 12But the commander left behind some of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields.</div><div class="p">13The Babylonians broke up the bronze pillars, the movable stands and the bronze Sea that were at the temple of the Lord and they carried the bronze to Babylon. 14They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, dishes and all the bronze articles used in the temple service. 15The commander of the imperial guard took away the censers and sprinkling bowls&#8212;all that were made of pure gold or silver.</div><div class="p">16The bronze from the two pillars, the Sea and the movable stands, which Solomon had made for the temple of the Lord, was more than could be weighed. 17Each pillar was eighteen cubits#25:17 That is, about 27 feet or about 8.1 meters high. The bronze capital on top of one pillar was three cubits#25:17 That is, about 4 1/2 feet or about 1.4 meters high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its network, was similar.</div><div class="p">18The commander of the guard took as prisoners Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest next in rank and the three doorkeepers. 19Of those still in the city, he took the officer in charge of the fighting men, and five royal advisers. He also took the secretary who was chief officer in charge of conscripting the people of the land and sixty of the conscripts who were found in the city. 20Nebuzaradan the commander took them all and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21There at Riblah, in the land of Hamath, the king had them executed.</div><div class="p">So Judah went into captivity, away from her land.</div><div class="p">22Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to be over the people he had left behind in Judah. 23When all the army officers and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah&#8212;Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maakathite, and their men. 24Gedaliah took an oath to reassure them and their men. &#8220;Do not be afraid of the Babylonian officials,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">25In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood, came with ten men and assassinated Gedaliah and also the men of Judah and the Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah. 26At this, all the people from the least to the greatest, together with the army officers, fled to Egypt for fear of the Babylonians.</div><div class="s1">Jehoiachin Released</div><div class="p">27In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. 28He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. 29So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king&#8217;s table. 30Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.</div>

 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Daniel&#8217;s Vision of a Man</div><div class="p">1In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war.#10:1 Or true and burdensome The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.</div><div class="p">2At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.</div><div class="p">4On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.</div><div class="p">7I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.</div><div class="p">10A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11He said, &#8220;Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.&#8221; And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.</div><div class="p">12Then he continued, &#8220;Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.&#8221;</div><div class="p">15While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. 16Then one who looked like a man#10:16 Most manuscripts of the Masoretic Text; one manuscript of the Masoretic Text, Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint Then something that looked like a human hand touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, &#8220;I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. 17How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.&#8221;</div><div class="p">18Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. 19&#8220;Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Peace! Be strong now; be strong.&#8221;</div><div class="p">When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, &#8220;Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.&#8221;</div><div class="p">20So he said, &#8220;Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; 21but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.</div>

 <div class="label">18</div><div class="s1">Jesus Arrested</div><div class="p">1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.</div><div class="p">2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.</div><div class="p">4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">5&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p">&#8220;I am he,&#8221; Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6When Jesus said, &#8220;I am he,&#8221; they drew back and fell to the ground.</div><div class="p">7Again he asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they said.</div><div class="p">8Jesus answered, &#8220;I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.&#8221; 9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: &#8220;I have not lost one of those you gave me.&#8221;#18:9 John 6:39</div><div class="p">10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest&#8217;s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant&#8217;s name was Malchus.)</div><div class="p">11Jesus commanded Peter, &#8220;Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?&#8221;</div><div class="p">12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.</div><div class="s1">Peter&#8217;s First Denial</div><div class="p">15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest&#8217;s courtyard, 16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.</div><div class="p">17&#8220;You aren&#8217;t one of this man&#8217;s disciples too, are you?&#8221; she asked Peter.</div><div class="p">He replied, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p">18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.</div><div class="s1">The High Priest Questions Jesus</div><div class="p">19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.</div><div class="p">20 &#8220;I have spoken openly to the world,&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.&#8221;</div><div class="p">22When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. &#8220;Is this the way you answer the high priest?&#8221; he demanded.</div><div class="p">23 &#8220;If I said something wrong,&#8221; Jesus replied, &#8220;testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?&#8221; 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.</div><div class="s1">Peter&#8217;s Second and Third Denials</div><div class="p">25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, &#8220;You aren&#8217;t one of his disciples too, are you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He denied it, saying, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p">26One of the high priest&#8217;s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I see you with him in the garden?&#8221; 27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before Pilate</div><div class="p">28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate came out to them and asked, &#8220;What charges are you bringing against this man?&#8221;</div><div class="p">30&#8220;If he were not a criminal,&#8221; they replied, &#8220;we would not have handed him over to you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">31Pilate said, &#8220;Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;But we have no right to execute anyone,&#8221; they objected. 32This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.</div><div class="p">33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, &#8220;Are you the king of the Jews?&#8221;</div><div class="p">34 &#8220;Is that your own idea,&#8221; Jesus asked, &#8220;or did others talk to you about me?&#8221;</div><div class="p">35&#8220;Am I a Jew?&#8221; Pilate replied. &#8220;Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?&#8221;</div><div class="p">36Jesus said, &#8220;My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.&#8221;</div><div class="p">37&#8220;You are a king, then!&#8221; said Pilate.</div><div class="p">Jesus answered, &#8220;You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">38&#8220;What is truth?&#8221; retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, &#8220;I find no basis for a charge against him. 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release &#8216;the king of the Jews&#8217;?&#8221;</div><div class="p">40They shouted back, &#8220;No, not him! Give us Barabbas!&#8221; Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.</div>

Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.</div><div class="p">20Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21&#8220;Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!&#8221;? 22These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.</div>
