DAY 4 OF 6

It's What’s Inside That Counts

Key Scripture: Matthew 5:21-48

Have you ever focused so much on external actions that you forgot to examine your heart?

Jesus continues his Sermon on the Mount by challenging us to focus on internal transformation rather than external appearances. In Matthew 5:21-48, he repeatedly says, "You have heard that it was said…" followed by, "But I tell you…" These teachings move the focus from outward obedience to heart-level change. For instance, Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,’ and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment" (Matthew 5:21-22).

Jesus raises the standard by showing us that the Kingdom of God isn’t just about following rules; it’s about a transformation of the heart. It’s not enough to avoid murder—Jesus calls us to deal with anger, bitterness, and hatred in our hearts. The world may focus on outward behavior, but God looks at our inner thoughts and motives.

This shift challenges us to examine what’s going on inside. Are there hidden areas of anger, lust, pride, or selfishness in your heart that need to be surrendered to God? Jesus cares about the condition of our hearts because our actions flow from what’s inside. As Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

Today, take a moment to reflect on what’s happening in your heart. Ask God to reveal any attitudes or thoughts that don’t align with His Kingdom, and invite Him to transform you from the inside out.

Prayer:
Father, help me focus on the condition of my heart. Reveal any hidden areas of sin, and transform me from the inside out so that my actions reflect your love and truth.
