Asa his son succeeded him as king, and in his days the country was at peace for ten years.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Asa King of Judah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.14.1"></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.14.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.14.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">He removed the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">14:3 </span><span class="ft">That is, wooden symbols of the goddess Asherah; here and elsewhere in 2 Chronicles</span></span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.14.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">He commanded Judah to seek the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.14.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">He removed the high places and incense altars in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.14.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> gave him rest.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.14.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.14.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">&#8220;Let us build up these towns,&#8221; he said to Judah, &#8220;and put walls around them, with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> our God; we sought him and he has given us rest on every side.&#8221; So they built and prospered.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.14.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.14.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men from Judah, equipped with large shields and with spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, armed with small shields and with bows. All these were brave fighting men.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.14.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.14.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army of thousands upon thousands and three hundred chariots, and came as far as Mareshah. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.14.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Asa went out to meet him, and they took up battle positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.14.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.14.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Then Asa called to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God and said, &#8220;</span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.14.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.14.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled, </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.14.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.14.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">They destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for the terror of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had fallen on them. They looted all these villages, since there was much plunder there. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.14.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">They also attacked the camps of the herders and carried off droves of sheep and goats and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">15</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Asa&#8217;s Reform</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.15.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The Spirit of God came on Azariah son of Oded. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.15.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">He went out to meet Asa and said to him, &#8220;Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.15.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.15.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">But in their distress they turned to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.15.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.15.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.15.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.15.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.15.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">15:8 </span><span class="ft">Vulgate and Syriac (see also Septuagint and verse 1); Hebrew does not have </span><span class="fq">Azariah son of</span><span class="ft">.</span></span></span><span class="content"> Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> that was in front of the portico of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s temple.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.15.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.15.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God was with him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.15.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.15.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa&#8217;s reign. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.15.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">At that time they sacrificed to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder they had brought back. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.15.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">They entered into a covenant to seek the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.15.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">All who would not seek the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.15.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">They took an oath to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.15.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> gave them rest on every side.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.15.15"></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.15.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.15.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa&#8217;s heart was fully committed to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> all his life. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.15.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.15.18"></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.15.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa&#8217;s reign.</span></span></div>

         <div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.20.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Paying Taxes to Caesar</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.20.19"></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.20.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="LUK.20.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So the spies questioned him: &#8220;Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.20.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.20.22"></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="LUK.20.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">He saw through their duplicity and said to them, </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.20.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.20.24"><span class="content">&#8220;Caesar&#8217;s,&#8221; they replied.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.20.24"></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="LUK.20.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">He said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar&#8217;s, and to God what is God&#8217;s.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="LUK.20.25"></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.20.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Resurrection and Marriage</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.20.26"></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.20.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="LUK.20.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">&#8220;Teacher,&#8221; they said, &#8220;Moses wrote for us that if a man&#8217;s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="LUK.20.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="LUK.20.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">The second </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="LUK.20.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="LUK.20.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">Finally, the woman died too. </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.20.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.20.33"></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="LUK.20.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">Jesus replied, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="LUK.20.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="LUK.20.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God&#8217;s children, since they are children of the resurrection.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="LUK.20.37"><span class="label">37</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord &#8216;the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.&#8217;</span></span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">20:37 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="EXO.3.6">Exodus 3:6</span></span></span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="LUK.20.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="LUK.20.38"></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="LUK.20.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="content">Some of the teachers of the law responded, &#8220;Well said, teacher!&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="LUK.20.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">And no one dared to ask him any more questions.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Whose Son Is the Messiah?</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="LUK.20.40"></span><span class="verse v41" data-usfm="LUK.20.41"><span class="label">41</span><span class="content">Then Jesus said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v42" data-usfm="LUK.20.42"><span class="label">42</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:</span></span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v42" data-usfm="LUK.20.42"><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The Lord said to my Lord:</span></span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v42" data-usfm="LUK.20.42"><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Sit at my right hand</span></span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v42" data-usfm="LUK.20.42"></span><span class="verse v43" data-usfm="LUK.20.43"><span class="label">43</span><span class="content"> </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">until I make your enemies</span></span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v43" data-usfm="LUK.20.43"><span class="wj"><span class="content">a footstool for your feet.&#8221;&#8198;&#8217;</span></span><span class="content"> </span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">20:43 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="PSA.110.1">Psalm 110:1</span></span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v43" data-usfm="LUK.20.43"></span><span class="verse v44" data-usfm="LUK.20.44"><span class="label">44</span><span class="content"> </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">David calls him &#8216;Lord.&#8217; How then can he be his son?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Warning Against the Teachers of the Law</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v44" data-usfm="LUK.20.44"></span><span class="verse v45" data-usfm="LUK.20.45"><span class="label">45</span><span class="content">While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, </span></span><span class="verse v46" data-usfm="LUK.20.46"><span class="label">46</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v47" data-usfm="LUK.20.47"><span class="label">47</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">They devour widows&#8217; houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.&#8221;</span></span></span></div>

         <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The High Priest of a New Covenant</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="HEB.8.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="HEB.8.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="HEB.8.2"></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="HEB.8.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="HEB.8.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="HEB.8.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: &#8220;See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.&#8221;</span><span class="note </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="HEB.8.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="HEB.8.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="HEB.8.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="HEB.8.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But God found fault with the people and said</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">8:8 </span><span class="ft">Some manuscripts may be translated </span><span class="fqa">fault and said to the
