Prayer - handing it over
Jesus is praying, and the disciples notice. That wasn’t unusual . Jesus prayed often. Talking with His Father was as natural to Him as breathing.
Watching Him, the disciples realized something: If He needs this, then we definitely need this. So they ask, “Master, teach us to pray.”
Jesus answers by giving them a model prayer—simple, profound, and still prayed by believers around the world. Do you ever pray this prayer?
Later, in the gospels and in Acts, the disciples are sent out. They preach, heal, bless, encourage—and they pray. Of course they pray. They had learned from Jesus that prayer isn’t the extra thing you add on; it’s the foundation underneath everything else.
Do you know what it means to pray? And do you share that with the people around you?
Think for a moment about the ordinary places where prayer can quietly shape a life:
- Parents praying with their children before bed
- A quick prayer before a hard meeting
- A moment of thanks before celebrating good news
- A whispered, “Lord, help,” when someone confides in you and you don’t have the strength to fix anything.
Prayer is not complicated. It is not for “special” Christians. It’s not about perfect words or impressive knowledge. Prayer is simply the ongoing conversation of a heart that knows it needs God. It is breath for the soul—oxygen for your spiritual lungs.
So if Jesus prayed, and if He taught others to pray, and if the early disciples prayed and taught others to pray—what about us? What rhythms of prayer shape your days? And who might learn to pray simply because they watch you do it?
Reflection Questions
- Do you ever pray the Lord’s Prayer? Why or why not?
- What place does prayer have in your life?
- How do you model prayer to the people around you?
Prayer
Father, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. Amen.
