4 Prayers for Foster ParentsSample
Pray for a Village
Fostering will bring you to the end of yourself. You simply cannot do it alone.
As a pastor’s wife and friend who loves to serve, I’m used to being the one who helps others. In general, I found it hard for me to receive help from others. Fostering has broken me of that.
My husband and I went through a really difficult foster season when we had a placement of 2 little girls, ages 2 and 3. Their needs were high, the case itself was very challenging and demanding, and to top it off, we couldn’t get them into childcare for 6 weeks. Meaning I was juggling my full-time job, four kids total, 2 of whom were in my care 24/7, being a pastor's wife, and trying to stay alive.
After that season, when I felt like I was drowning, I committed to myself that moving forward, if anyone offered to help me as we foster, my answer would always be yes. I knew that if we didn’t get help, we would burn out as foster parents. I could no longer foster alone; I had to be willing to accept help from others around me. I’m so glad I made that decision!
Now when we foster, I don’t just accept help, I sometimes boldly ask for it from our community. If you are in a Christ-centered community, I am confident your community wants to help you. So let them. When they don’t know how to help, tell them how they can help.
In Ecclesiastes, we see a beautiful image of “two are better than one.” When you feel weak from fostering, it’s important that you take Ecclesiastes 4:9-12’s wisdom, and you let your brothers and sisters in Christ “pull you up.”
Today, pray this prayer: “God, provide me with a village to do this with. I cannot do this work on my own. I need Your strength, and I need helpers.”
