Prepare the Way: A 21-Day Reading Plan Through John by Justeina BrownleeSample
Day 9: Who Sinned?
Read John 9
The disciples see a man born blind and ask Jesus if the blindness was caused by sin—either his own or his parents'. This reflected a common belief that suffering was the result of personal sin. However, Jesus corrects them, explaining that the man’s blindness was not due to sin, but an opportunity for God’s Glory to be revealed.
Jesus’ response shifts the focus from assigning blame to seeking God’s Purpose. Not all suffering is a direct result of sin. Instead, it can serve as a platform for God's Works to be displayed. Jesus challenges us to view hardships not as punishment, but as moments where God can demonstrate His Power and Grace.
This story encourages us not to rush to judgment in times of suffering, but to trust that God has a Greater Plan. The blind man's healing, which occurred despite opposition from the Pharisees, reveals that God’s Glory can shine through any situation.
Reflection Questions:
- How does knowing that suffering is not always a result of sin change your view on hardships?
- In your own struggles, how can you seek to see God's Purpose and make room for His Work to be displayed?
