Overcoming Fear in Sharing
“for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” — 2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
Fear is one of the most common obstacles to sharing our faith. We can often have thoughts like “What if I say the wrong thing?” or “What if they reject me?” often hold us back. Yet Scripture gives us a powerful reminder in 2 Timothy 1:7, that "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline". When fear takes over, we must remember that it’s not from God.
Overcoming fear doesn’t mean you’ll never feel nervous or unsure. It means choosing to trust God more than your fear. One powerful way to do this is by shifting your focus. Instead of worrying about how others will respond, focus on being obedient to God’s call. Your job isn’t to convert anyone—that’s the Holy Spirit’s role. Your job is to share the message faithfully and leave the results to Him.
Consider the story of Moses. When God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses was overwhelmed by his own inadequacy. He told God he wasn’t eloquent and asked, “Who am I that I should go?” God’s response was simple: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:11-12). That same promise applies to you today.
Fear diminishes as we take small, faithful steps of obedience, trusting God with the outcome. Start by praying for opportunities to share your faith. When those moments arise, trust that God will give you the words to say. You might feel awkward or stumble through the conversation, but that’s okay. Your willingness to step out in faith is what matters most.
As you practice saying yes to God, your confidence will grow, and fear will lose its grip. Remember, every act of obedience, big and small, counts in God’s Kingdom.
What fears hold you back, and how can you overcome them through God’s power?
Pray
Father, replace my fear with faith. Remind me that Your Spirit gives me power, love, and self-control. Help me trust You as I step out to share Your love. Amen.
