A Generous Life - Horizon Church March Bible Reading PlanSample

Over and Above Generosity
Andrew Hanna
In Luke 21:1-4, we encounter the widow who gave all she had to live on—two small coins. While the rich gave out of their abundance, the widow’s offering was an act of radical sacrifice. Jesus commended her, not for the amount, but for the heart behind it. She went beyond the required offering because she understood that giving is not just about fulfilling a duty, but about offering trust and dependence on God.
In 1 Timothy 6:17-19, Paul instructs the wealthy to not set their hopes on riches, but on God, who richly provides. He emphasizes that those who are blessed with material wealth are to use their resources for good—by being generous, sharing with others, and laying up treasure in heaven. Paul challenges believers to go beyond a minimum standard and live generously, reflecting God’s heart of compassion and grace.
The early church exemplified this in Acts 2:44-45, where believers shared everything they had. They didn’t just tithe; they went above and beyond, selling their possessions to meet the needs of others. Their generosity wasn’t just a financial transaction—it was a reflection of the love and unity they shared in Christ.
As believers, we are called to do more than simply meet the basic requirement. Our generosity should reflect the heart of God, who gave everything for us. Whether it’s our time, talents, or treasure, God invites us to give sacrificially and joyfully, trusting that as we invest in others, we store up treasures that last for eternity. Going beyond the tithe isn’t just about finances; it’s a posture of the heart, one that seeks to bless others and glorify God with all that we have.
