Live Unashamed for Jesus: A 5-Day Devotional Plan With Matthew West

DAY 1 OF 5

God is Unashamed

God is not ashamed of you. Do you realize what a powerful statement this is? God is not embarrassed to call you His child. All too often, you and I battle feelings of guilt, embarrassment, and shame. We feel guilty for our wrong turns. We are ashamed of our past. We hide our faces from the embarrassment of our failures.

So, we sometimes assume that others feel the same way about us. We feel judged and unworthy in their presence. It is then easy to transfer these feelings to how we think God sees us. This type of shame can damage our self-esteem and cause us to struggle with trusting others. Shame is one of the enemy’s tools to defeat us. When we are ashamed, it blocks us from living the life of freedom God has planned for us.

I once saw an interview on a talk show where a young lady was telling her story of abandonment. She gave an example of what it looked like to have a parent embarrassed by her presence. She said that when her mother was busy or with other people and she approached her, her mother would simply wave her hand at her and say, “Poof, you’re gone.” Leaving the little girl with assurance that she was a bother and an embarrassment to her mother.

We will never hear those words from our Heavenly Father. He loves us. He is not put off or ashamed of you and me. No matter what we have done. No matter where we have been. Isn’t that powerful?

We can see that demonstrated in these three ways:

  • He loves us unconditionally

We remember our past and our shame, but God does not!

Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

  • He died for us – in an unashamed public display of affection for us.

Romans 5:8 - "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us".

  • He prays and intercedes for us – He calls us His own.

1 John 2:1: Jesus is our "advocate with the Father"

God is unashamed of us. He is unashamed of our past. And because He is unashamed of us, we can live for Him. That is why I wrote these lyrics, “And I will live my faith out loud; take a stand and stand my ground, for the One who took my shame, I’m unashamed!” So today, let’s lay aside the shame. Let’s accept God’s unconditional love for us. Let’s rejoice in His forgiveness and walk unashamed of the One who took our shame!

Do Something:

  1. What pages of your story are the ones you wish you could forget? Which ones make you feel ashamed?
  2. How does it make you feel to know that God is unashamed of you?
  3. Read Micah 7:19, Hebrews 7:19 and, 1 John 3:1.
