Our Discipleship Journey: Part 1Sample

Discovery Bible Method
In Acts 8, we read about an angel telling Philip to travel south on a desert road. On his way, he meets an Ethiopian eunuch. This story gives us insight into the idea behind the Discovery Bible Method. Philip is going about his day when God directs him to someone who’s already curious and eager to engage with God’s Word. The Holy Spirit prompts Philip to stick close to the eunuch’s chariot, where he hears the man reading from Isaiah’s prophecy – and struggling to understand it.
The passage in Isaiah that the eunuch was reading was a prophecy about Jesus. Philip could’ve launched into a historical, genealogical, or theological lecture, or pointed the man to other passages in Isaiah that speak about eunuchs. Instead, he simply meets the Ethiopian exactly where he is, focusing on the scripture that’s right in front of them. He doesn’t try to overwhelm the man with his knowledge or expertise. Instead, he answers the questions the guy is asking in the moment and guides him to discover the meaning of the text for himself.
The five Rs of the Discovery Bible Method are read, retell, reflect, respond, and review.
First, we read a chosen Bible passage with the person we’re discipling. One person reads from their version, then the other reads from theirs, so you’re hearing the text twice and noticing different nuances.
Second, we retell what we’ve read in simple terms. Don’t show off your wealth of scriptural knowledge. Keep it real and accessible. Ask the person, ‘Did I miss anything?’ Try to explain the passage of scripture in such a relatable way that it feels possible for the other person to do the same.
Third, we reflect on what stands out to us in the passage. Again, be authentic. Instead of trying to pick something you think will help the other person, ask the Holy Spirit what He wants to show you.
Fourth, we respond by asking, ‘What are you going to do about it? And who else can you share that with?’ You both do this, so your discipleship revolves around obedience, personal application, and always sharing what you learn.
Finally, we review. The next time you meet with the person, ask, ‘What did you do about what we discussed last time? How did it go? Who did you tell?’ Share the highs and lows and hold each other accountable.
Take a moment to appreciate how very much alive the Bible is. The Discovery Bible Method is a simple way for people to read God’s living, active Word, hear Him speak to them personally, and then apply that revelation to their lives. As you begin to use this relational method with others, be expectant that God will show up in amazing ways. Remember that you don’t need to be an expert. Just meet people where they are and let the Bible speak for itself in powerful, personal ways. Enjoy the journey and watch God work.
