Looking UpSample

Planted by Streams
The more I get into birding, the more I become interested in the rest of the natural world. Birds can be a wonderful gateway into the study of plants, insects, weather, and beyond! As we connect with God through the power and beauty of creation, we may begin to see our prayer lives enriched. Sitting still to watch and listen to birds helps me sit still to listen for God—sometimes at the very same time!
In today’s Scripture reading, the Psalmist paints the picture of a healthy tree nurtured by streams of water. Take a moment, if you’d like, to picture this tree. What does its bark feel like? What type of leaves does it have? How can you tell that it is strong? What birds, animals, or insects perch in its branches? Our imaginations can be powerful tools for meditation and prayer.
Birds draw me deeper into hope. They help me bring my grief, lament, and anxiety to God, reminding me that I am seen and held in love. This psalm invites us to plant our lives squarely and securely next to streams of living water, trusting that God will nurture and sustain us all our days.
