Is There Hope for My Marriage? One Good Reason to Stay Together

DAY 3 OF 5

The Dance

Oneness is the Trinity’s invitation into a world of sacrificial love and submission. With the mantra of equality and fairness proclaimed often in our culture, the submission language of Ephesians 5 feels out of place today, even counter cultural. It does, however, fit into God’s culture–the culture of the Trinity, where Jesus submits to the Father repeatedly until it actually leads to his death.

Jesus knew quite well what was coming and how difficult and painful the suffering of the cross would be. He dreaded being forsaken by God, crying out on the cross, “My God, my God! Why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). What an inconceivable thing to be forsaken by God!

Submission in the Trinity is not a new concept. Long before time began, the Trinity existed and was marked by submission, sacrifice, and love.

Perhaps, all we can see is that, because Jesus submitted to the Father and went to the cross, we are now saved from eternal suffering. But we are not only saved from eternal death and separation from God. We are saved to Someone.

God loves us so deeply that He saves us and invites us into “the dance,” as theologian C.S. Lewis calls it. This is the dance of knowing God for all that He is, the dance of the Trinity, which is characterized not by doormat submission but beautiful lifegiving submission. When He invites us into submission and sacrifice, He invites us into His glory!

It is enough to be saved and belong to God Himself, but being God’s child changes the way we act. It changes our spiritual DNA.

As the foal of the winningest horse runs like the wind beside his mother, we run alongside our heavenly Father, longing to be like Him and do what He does.

And, oh, how our Father dances!

About this Plan

Is There Hope for My Marriage? One Good Reason to Stay Together

Godly oneness has little to do with the dysfunctional way we often act as one but has everything to do with His desire to be in connection with us. In our five-day devotional, you’ll learn that God sees your marriage as a treasure – the beautiful, the messy, and the difficult times. We would like to thank Laura Dye and FamilyLife for providing this plan.
