Commissioned: Jesus Saves: From Brokenness to Freedom

DAY 2 OF 6

David Hides His Sin

In our last study, we saw how David fell into sin. Now we see what David did next: He tried to hide his sin. David’s adultery with Bathsheba resulted in her becoming pregnant. So David brought her husband, Uriah, home from the battlefront to sleep with her so that it would appear that she was pregnant by her husband. But Uriah was too honorable to sleep with his wife while his comrades were engaged in battle. What a rebuke to David! Uriah’s righteous response to David’s trickery was God graciously giving David a chance to see his own sin.

But David persisted in attempting to hide his sin. He kept Uriah in Jerusalem another night and even got him drunk so that he would sleep with Bathsheba. Still, Uriah resisted.

Then David went even deeper into sin—he set up a plot to have Uriah killed. David’s cruel and cynical response to Joab after forcing him to orchestrate the death of his closest comrade, Uriah, showed that David had thoroughly hardened his heart: “Don’t let it bother you, people die, it just happens.” David is rationalizing his sin, trying to hide it even from himself. But Uriah’s death did not just happen. David killed him. David had moved from adultery to deception to murder and now to complete hardness of heart.

In one sense, David’s story is our story. We sin, then we try to hide our sin, then we rationalize it to hide it even from ourselves. Our condition becomes worse and worse.

Our next Bible study will show us the road from brokenness to freedom. David traveled it and so can we.

Stop, think and pray:

Can we see ourselves in the mirror of David’s story? What sin are we hiding? What sin are we rationalizing to make it seem acceptable? Let’s examine our consciences and get ready to confess our sins to God.

About this Plan

Commissioned: Jesus Saves: From Brokenness to Freedom

We all fall short. We all carry wounds. But Jesus came to bring healing, mercy, and true freedom. This plan walks you through one of the most raw and redemptive stories in Scripture—King David’s failure, repentance, and restoration. Through David’s journey, we’re invited to see the truth about sin, the depth of God’s mercy, and the freedom Jesus offers to every heart.
