Dog Dad Devotions on Leadership, Loyalty and LoveSample

The Protector Instinct
Praying for your dog's safety and your role as guardian.
Trail Marker:
"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."
(Psalm 18:2, NIV)
Devotional:
Watch how your dog positions himself between you and a perceived threat—hackles raised, stance widened, attention locked.
It's instinct, not training.
Something hardwired into his DNA that says:
"I protect what's mine."
As a man, you understand this. The urge to stand between danger and those you love isn't learned—it's built in. God designed you with a protector's heart, just as He designed your dog with guardian instincts.
But here's where the parallel deepens: Both you and your dog face threats you can't always see coming. The speeding car around the corner. The chocolate, or vitamins, left within reach. The storm that triggers panic.
Despite your best intentions, you can't create a perfect shield. That's where prayer enters—not as a backup plan, but as your first line of defense.
When Scripture describes God as a fortress and shield, it's acknowledging a reality both you and your dog understand at gut level: even the strongest protectors need protection at times too.
Your dog relies on your vigilance.
You rely on God's.
And in that chain of watchful care, something profound happens—you experience both sides of protection. The weight of responsibility and the relief of being covered by something, Someone, greater than yourself.
Straight Talk:
In what areas of life have you been trying to be the ultimate protector instead of trusting God's covering?
Scripture-Based Prayer:
God of protection, as I watch over my dog You've entrusted to me, I'm reminded that true safety comes from Your hand alone.
"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart." —Psalm 91:4 NIV
Watch over my dog when he's beyond my sight. Guard him from dangers I can't anticipate—the things he might ingest, the places he might escape to, the accidents that could harm him.
"The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." —Psalm 121:7-8 NIV
I entrust our comings and goings to You—our walks, our travels, our adventures together. Keep a hedge of protection around my dog's body, mind, and spirit.
"My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." —Psalm 121:2 NIV
Remind me that while I bear responsibility for my dog's wellbeing, I'm not the ultimate protector. You are. Let me find peace in knowing that while I sleep, You remain vigilant. While I'm away, You're still present. In Your strong name, I pray.
