Right when we need it

I struggle to be present. I often find myself living in the future or ruminating on the past. If I’m not careful, this thinking can quickly snowball and set me spinning in fear and anxiety as I desperately seek to find something stable to hold… a sense of control in my life. Today was one of those days. The anxious thoughts and feelings were coming thick and fast; regret for the choices I’d made last week sided with guilt and shame at not living up to the expectations I had of myself. Then, looking forward at the list of things I’m responsible for, yet feel incapable of carrying, left me paralysed.

I stopped, took a deep breath and put my hand on my heart. "What about right now? Am I safe in this moment? And God, what are you requiring me to do at this moment?" I asked myself. Many of us spend a lot of time and energy preparing for a future of worst-case scenarios. But often these worst-case scenarios never eventuate. Instead, we invest in our own suffering, and we waste emotional and mental energy. Sometimes, those worst-case scenarios do come to pass. But does the earlier rumination and panic equip you to deal with the "right now" of life? I can tell you from experience that it does not. But I can also tell you from experience that God can be trusted to provide everything we need for the "right now" of life.

Grace for right now. Strength for right now. Truth for right now. Connection, compassion and love… for right now. Not minutes, or hours, or months or years earlier – God’s grace is for right now! He knows what’s coming, and He has the world’s resources at His fingertips ready to provide for those He loves, which is you!
