Is God Enough?—Encouragement From David’s Psalms

DAY 5 OF 7

Is God’s Justice Enough?

Have you ever been cheated? Maybe scammed? When you’re faced with injustice, how do you feel? My first reaction is anger, and a close second is the pursuit of justice. I’ve discovered that human justice isas flawed as the humans who seek it. Do you suppose that’s why the “Justice League” superheroes are so popular? If Superman and Batman could attain true justice, there would be no more sequels, right? But we live in a broken world in which neither humans nor heroes can deliver perfect justice.

But God can. His justice is as perfect as His mercy and grace.

In the Old Testament (OT), Yahweh recited His-story (history) to Moses who wrote the first five Books of the Bible (the Pentateuch). In the third Book, Leviticus, God described His laws for religious, social, and personal relationships. Sadly, the rest of God’s OT account proved how imperfect human justice is.

Psalm 7:1-2, describes how David took refuge in God, confessing his fear of enemies who act unjustly. In Psalm 7:3-5, he humbly seeks God’s perspective on the injustice he feels. “Lord my God, if I have done this and there is guilt on my hands…then let my enemy pursue and overtake me.”

In the New Testament (NT), Jesus’s life on earth modeled perfect justice, tempered by mercy and grace. His crucifixion was the greatest injustice in human history, and His resurrection displayed His unimaginable power. Did He rise from the grave and use His power to make the world just? No. Instead, He waits on His eternal throne for the Day He’ll judge every human heart in light of His perfect knowledge.

In Psalm 7:6-16, David reminds himself that God is sovereign over all things: eternal, national, and personal. God promises justice on the eternal stage, but David gives us a glimpse of God’s justice on this earth. “Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit they have made. The trouble they cause recoils on them; their violence comes down on their own heads.” (Psalm 7:15-16). If David spoke in current-day terms, he’d say, “He made his bed, let him lie in it.” Though some folks call it karma, God’s people know it’s an earthly preview of His eternal justice.

Then, as is often true of David’s pleading songs, he ends with thanksgiving and praise. “I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High” (Psalm 7:17).

We serve a righteous Judge. Though we may not witness His justice until the end of days, we can rest in knowing His sovereign knowledge and power make His justice perfect.

God’s Justice Is Enough because His sovereignty guarantees the justice to come.

Have you been treated unjustly? Have you asked Jesus to show you His perspective and reveal if you have any part in the injustice you feel? With a heart swept clean of pride and humbled before your God, are you willing to pray for your enemy, as Jesus commands us (Matthew 5:44)?
Do you have a high sense of justice, making it difficult to await God’s justice? Can you entrust to God—the Creator who knows your whole heart—with your anger, disappointment, and grief? Let His perfect rest give you a peace beyond your limited understanding (Philippians 4:4-9).
