Growing in Integrity at WorkSample

Growing in Integrity at Work

DAY 3 OF 4

Begin in Prayer

Devotional – Integrity Through Consistency

When thinking about examples of how integrity is demonstrated and cultivated at work, Joseph in the Old Testament is at the top of the list. Several chapters in Genesis are filled with stories of his character and integrity. Here are three areas that we would be wise to emulate as we grow in our integrity.

1. Integrity in Private Temptation

Joseph was a wise, skillful, and handsome young man who caught the eye of his boss’ wife. But he resisted Potiphar’s wife’s advances not just because of the consequences that would surely come from his earthly master, but because he did not want to sin against God. “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” (Gen. 39:9) True integrity shows in the private decisions no one else sees. Joseph feared the Lord more than he feared people.

2. Integrity When No Reward Is Guaranteed

In Genesis chapter 40, Joseph found himself in prison and his cell mates were the Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker. One night they both had a dream, but even after interpreting dreams for the cupbearer, baker, and even Pharaoh himself, Joseph was forgotten. He helped others without knowing if or when he’d be helped. Integrity isn't transactional. Joseph’s faithfulness wasn’t dependent on a guaranteed reward or recognition.

3. Integrity in Leadership

When Joseph was elevated to power in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself, Joseph administered resources wisely, gave credit to God, and did not seek self-promotion. As his story unfolds, he is miraculously reunited with his brothers, the ones who hated him and sold him into slavery. This scene could be the truest test of character. Joseph responded with humility and responsibility and extended forgiveness to them.

  • Who are you when no one is looking?
  • Does your service to others have strings attached?
  • When are you tempted to position yourself for acknowledgment or reward?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive to be able to grow in your integrity?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the examples in scripture of people who were devoted to you throughout times when they felt alone and abandoned, enduring pressures at work and painful family trauma. Open my eyes to my blind spots. Help me to love my enemies and pray for those who have persecuted me. I want to be a person of integrity, pointing people toward you in my words, actions, and reactions. Amen.

About this Plan

Growing in Integrity at Work

The Bible speaks of integrity in several places. The Hebrew word for it means completeness, fullness, innocence, and simplicity. In the New Testament, the Greek word for integrity conveys indestructibility, incorruptibility, and being imperishable. If you bring those threads together, we see that from the Bible’s perspective, integrity is strength lived out in wholeness and demonstrated by consistent reliability. In this 4-day plan, we will probe the lives of some examples in scripture and examine how your work can be an avenue to grow in integrity.
