Upside-Down Leadership: 30 Days to Lasting ImpactSample

Day 5: Share Your Goals to Inspire Others
There’s something powerful about discussing your goals with your team and family. It deepens connection, builds trust, and creates momentum. I saw this firsthand during a deployment when I set a personal fitness goal. I gave it a fun, catchy name—“Michael B. Can’t Beat Me” (#MBCBM)—not because I was actually challenging Michael B. Jordan, but because it gave me a vivid image of what I was striving toward.
To my surprise, my team rallied behind it. They pushed me in workouts, held me accountable, and asked how they could help. Then something amazing happened: they started setting and sharing their own fitness goals. That energy spilled into professional goals, and our momentum grew. We began sharpening each other—spiritually, physically, and mentally. Our productivity rose, morale improved, and we were leading each other just by sharing our goals.
Honestly, this wasn’t some grand leadership strategy I planned and executed; it just happened...and worked. That’s when I realized there’s power in purposeful transparency.
Jesus modeled this perfectly. In Luke 4:18-19 NLT, He boldly declared His mission:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come."
Later, in Luke 9:22 NLT, He explained exactly what He came to do—even though it meant His suffering and death: "The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things...He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead."
Jesus’ clarity of purpose inspired those around Him to pursue lives of bold obedience. His disciples learned to live with that same sense of mission, not just because He taught them what to do, but because He showed them how to live it out.
Reignite Your Goals
Let’s be honest: life has a way of dulling our vision. Responsibilities pile up, disappointment creeps in, and we lose sight of the dreams God planted in us.
But it’s time to refocus.
Here’s a simple, practical D.O.P.E. framework to start:
1. Dream in High Definition.
I borrowed this concept from author and speaker Chris Hogan. Dreaming in “high definition” means we see our dreams clearly before we can pursue them. Picture it. Walk through it in your mind. Feel the weight of what it will mean to achieve it.
2. Offload (or "Brain Dump") Everything.
Write, sketch, or voice-record every detail of that dream. Don’t worry about formatting or structure. Just get it out of your head and into view.
3. Plan.
Apply the reality of your current resources and position to your dream. Narrow your focus to 3–4 core areas (“legs”) that will support your dream. For example, my #MBCBM goal had four: diet, cardio, strength training, and rest. Then ask:
- What does success look like?
- Why does it matter?
- Is it aligned with my God-given purpose?
- Am I ready (spiritually, mentally, physically, resourcefully)?
- Who is part of this?
- Who needs to be part of this?
- What’s my process and timeline?
4. Execute Boldly.
Take action and celebrate progress. Don’t wait for perfect conditions because God has already prepared you for this moment, vision, goal, business venture, etc. Read 2 Samuel 22, and remember that you serve the same God David praised for:
- Illuminating his path and the darkness around him,
- Strengthening him to achieve greatness,
- Creating a perfect plan and making him surefooted (firm) as he emphatically defeated opposition and overcame insurmountable obstacles,
- Protecting every venture and endeavor, and
- Giving him victory in every circumstance.
When you hit milestones, celebrate! Every step forward is a testimony to God’s faithfulness.
Your Purpose Isn’t Just Yours
Jesus didn’t keep His mission private; neither should we. When we share our goals—especially the ones aligned with our God-given purpose—we ignite something in others. The disciples didn’t just admire Jesus’ life; they mirrored it. They carried the Gospel to the ends of the earth because they saw a leader fully surrendered to His calling.
You’re not just mindlessly chasing goals. You’re strategically modeling what a purpose-driven lifestyle looks like in action.
So today, reflect on this:
What goal has God put on your heart that you’ve been quiet about? Write it down, pray over it, and share it with someone. Then, watch how your obedience sparks boldness in others.
