Know Jesus, Be Transformed

DAY 28 OF 30

Jesus on Trial

Between Jesus’ arrest at midnight and His crucifixion the following morning, Jesus stood on trial more than five times. Accusation after accusation was heaped on Him. Both the Jewish as well as the Roman leaders questioned Him. Many people testified falsely against Him.

Nothing about these trials was fair. The Sanhedrin broke many of its own rules by trying Jesus in the manner that they did. Though Pilate found Jesus innocent, he gave in to the mob’s demands and released Barabbas, instead of Jesus, to the Jews to be crucified. During the trial, people spat on Jesus and struck Him with their fists. One of the Jewish officials slapped Him in the face. Throughout the trials, Jesus maintained His calm. His authority and dignity shone through the mayhem of the night. He spoke up only to defend His identity as the Son of God and the King of the Jews.

Jesus’ unflinching dedication to His mission motivated Him to persevere to the end, no matter the cost. He came to die even for the officials and the people who tortured Him.

The Scripture warns us that the world will hate us, just like they hated Jesus. Like Christ, we too are not of this world. We are God’s children, who belong to the Kingdom of God. Yet, the world will neither recognize us nor acknowledge our identity and spiritual heritage.

Jesus knows what it feels like to be unfairly treated for the sake of God’s kingdom. He understands how frustrating it is to stand up for the truth in the midst of opposition. Our Savior can not only identify with us, but also empower us to withstand persecution, and love our persecutors.

Respond

  • What thoughts come to your mind when you think of the humiliation that Jesus bore on your behalf?
  • In the midst of opposition, how do you pray for your accusers and for yourself?
