The Transforming Power of Service at WorkSample

The Transforming Power of Service at Work

DAY 2 OF 3

Service – Do the things only you can do.

Stooping to do the things anyone can do but no one does is very important for Christians at work. But Jesus didn’t stop with doing the acts of service that nobody else wanted to do. Let’s follow the story of Holy Week a little further.

A short while after the meal, Jesus demonstrated that He was willing to do the task that only He could do. Over the next few days, we see Jesus surrendering, suffering, giving himself for the salvation of the world, and rising victoriously. His mission was His alone to do, and He was faithful to complete it.

You also have a mission that only you can fulfill. You have unique gifts and talents to offer your company, and the organization won’t be all that it can be if you don’t bring all that you are. Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV) says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

The gift of grace is such a beautiful thing. By grace, we are saved from our sin, foolishness, and frailty. But the passage assures us that we are not just saved from something, we are saved for something. We have been created to do “good works.” God has work for you to do. Work that only you can do. Work that is as rare, distinct, and special as you are.

Stepping into your gifting is also servant leadership. As your career grows, it will be increasingly important that you serve by doing the things only you can do. In fact, by not doing this - by focusing solely on being willing to do the things anyone can do – you will be dishonoring God’s call to service.

Whether you’re doing the things that anyone could do or the things only you can do, remember that both types of service are expressions of love, humility, and leadership.

Take a moment to:

  • Jot down your gifts, strengths, and the things that give you energy.
  • Re-read your list and pause to thank God for each of those qualities.
  • Consider how they can enhance your team and business.
  • Prayerfully read Psalm 139:13-24

This 3-day devotional plan will change your perspective on servant leadership and free you to serve at work in ways that transform you and impact others. Serving is one of the most practical ways to live out your faith at work. Whether it’s your boss, team, customers, or even competitors, putting others’ needs first gets noticed and points people to God. There’s no question about the strength, power and authority of Jesus, yet He served. It was central to His mission, and even now, He sits by the Father, advocating for us.
