Jesus Is Your HealerSample

Day 3: The Power of Joy
Introduction:
Today, I want to encourage you about the power of joy. Paul talks all about joy in the book of Philippians, and he even commands us, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4 NKJV). This scripture is a wonderful reminder for us on its own, but today I want to give you some context that shows just how amazing it really is and how powerful joy was in Paul’s life.
Just think about all the sicknesses and diseases that probably surrounded Paul while he was held in that horrible, filthy prison, yet we never read about the apostle Paul getting sick during his captivity there. Sickness and disease were everywhere, but they did not touch him. Even when Paul eventually died, he didn’t die a sick man, because Paul had the power of joy.
You may say, “Well, I don’t feel joyful, so how am I supposed to get my healing?” Let me tell you, friend, joy doesn’t have anything to do with your feelings. Joy has to do with what God has deposited on the inside of your spirit, and it’s in there right now. As you’re reading this, you could make the decision to start smiling. You could say to yourself, “You’re getting off track. You need to rejoice in the Lord always!” I have done this for myself many times, and every time I have put on a smile and rejoiced, my mood changed because I was putting on joy. When the Bible tells us that joy is like medicine (see Proverbs 17:22 NKJV), it isn’t just saying that to fill up space or sound good — it’s the truth. You have a powerhouse on the inside of you! Joy is inside you, and when you express that joy, it has healing power!
Practical Application:
- The Bible tells us that the apostle Paul rejoiced even in the midst of some of the most daunting circumstances. Think about his circumstances and let it change your perspective on your own responsibility to rejoice.
- Joy is a choice, so find a verse about joy that you can say to yourself whenever you catch yourself losing your joy. Go ahead and say it to yourself in the mirror right now.
