Are you like a pelican in the wilderness?

“I am like a pelican in the wilderness.” (Psalm 102:6 NKJV) 😳

What does a verse like that do for you? I admit, for years, I just skipped over verses like this, moving on to the next, clearer section. But in doing so, I would’ve missed so much!

For example: Pelican—why this specific image? It got me researching to understand why this comparison was used. 🔎 It takes time, but it’s worth it! Because every time, I feel like I’m getting a little closer to Jesus. 😇

It reminds me of the pursuit of wisdom—the Bible says:
📖 “...if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:4-5 ESV)

So I ask myself: Why the pelican? Why this specific image? I started looking in Bible commentaries, online, in other Bible verses. Is there a connection? And then the “Aha” moment: In ancient times, the pelican was a symbol of grief and loneliness.

Suddenly, it clicks. David felt lonely. Just like I sometimes feel.

But the best part? David doesn’t stay stuck in his feelings. He speaks faith and chooses to move forward when he says:

📖 “For God will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory. He will respond to the prayer of the destitute…” (Psalm 102:16-18 NIV)

So much gold in one verse—don’t you want more of that too? 😃 When you ask the right questions while reading the Bible, you’ll learn SO MUCH wisdom.
