Leading Through ChangeSample

Leaving “Ordinary” & Leading Through the Exodus of Calling
In The Dream Giver, Bruce Wilkinson describes the Exodus story as a metaphor for the journey every person, and every leader, must take when responding to a God-given dream. Israel’s departure from Egypt mirrors the inner departure each leader must make from what is familiar, predictable, and comfortable. The Israelites longed for the Promised Land, yet their first step required something far more difficult: leaving “Ordinary.”
Leadership often demands the same.
When God births a calling or vision within us, it pulls us beyond what is safe. The comfort of Egypt, with its old patterns, familiar systems, and predictable routines, can quietly seduce us into staying where we are. But like Israel, leaders cannot step into a new future while clinging to an old environment.
The Exodus metaphor reminds us of three realities leaders must embrace:
- Every God-given dream begins with disruption. Israel’s journey started with a disturbance. God unsettled the status quo. Likewise, leaders often enter new seasons through holy discomfort. Change rarely begins with convenience.
- The wilderness is not a mistake; it is part of the formation. In Wilkinson’s metaphor, the wilderness represents the space between where you began and where God is leading. For leaders, this often includes uncertainty, resistance, and self-doubt. Yet it is precisely in the wilderness where leaders are shaped, where dependence on God deepens, and clarity is refined.
- The Promised Land requires courage and obedience. The Israelites had to move toward a future bigger than themselves. Leaders, too, must be willing to follow God into unfamiliar territory, taking risks, confronting fears, and leading others through ambiguity. Your “promised land” calling cannot be inherited without a willingness to trust God fully in the process.
You are preparing to lead people through their own “Exodus” - organizationally, spiritually, and personally. Your leadership will often involve guiding others out of “Ordinary” toward growth, transformation, and impact. And to do so, you must first make the journey yourself.
The dream God places within you will demand movement. It will require surrender. It will invite trust. And it will shape you into the kind of leader who can walk people through their own wilderness with compassion, courage, and clarity.
May you lead boldly, not from the safety of Egypt but from the hope of the Promised Land.
Reflect on the following questions:
- Where in your leadership journey are you still holding on to “Egypt”, the familiar patterns, comforts, or fears that keep you from fully pursuing the dream God has placed in you?
- Identify one concrete step this week that will help you leave “Ordinary” behind, whether through a decision, a conversation, or a disciplined act of courage, and move intentionally toward the “Promised Land” of your calling.
