The Four LovesSample

Agape as a Form of Evangelism
Have you ever found yourself people-watching? Maybe it was at the mall, at the park, at an airport, or wandering around a carnival. People are fascinating—the way they dress, the way they walk, the way they react to things around them. You might be so drawn in that you suddenly realize what you’re doing, feel a little awkward, and quickly look away so you don’t seem like a creeper staring at strangers.
But here’s a more interesting, and slightly unsettling, thought: people are watching you, too. Not in a creepy, binoculars-from-the-bushes way, but in a very real, everyday sense. People observe how you live. How you make decisions. What you value. What you stand for. What you tolerate. What you pursue. And if you openly identify as a Christian, people pay even closer attention. They wonder: Does this person actually live out what they claim to believe? Does following Jesus make any real visible difference in their lives or is it simply a label?
Love is our most credible evidence that we really are who we say we are. Jesus said that the world will know we belong to Him by our love for one another. Not by our sermons. Not by our arguments. Not by our social media posts or even by our Bible knowledge or church attendance. They will know us by the way we love one another, according to how Jesus loves us.
Of course, Jesus teaches that we must declare Him in both word and deed. But here, He intensifies the point: our actions must align with the gospel we proclaim. Our love either validates or invalidates our message. If love is missing, everything else we say about Jesus loses credibility. Why would someone want to become a Christian if the lives of Jesus’s followers don’t look any different from the lives of those who don’t know Him? Why would anyone want to join a community of faith that constantly bickers, gossips, criticizes, and tears itself apart? Why would anyone be drawn to a church that seems more invested in winning arguments than winning hearts…more focused on being right than being Christlike…more known for division than unity…more eager to throw word-grenades than extend grace?
It’s no wonder that the famous quote rings painfully true: “The single greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, people who acknowledge Jesus with their words but walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle.”
It stings because it reflects a reality we’ve all seen at one time or another. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If Christians can be the greatest cause of unbelief, then Christians can also be the greatest cause of revival. Imagine if people encountered believers who didn’t just talk about Jesus, but lived in such a way that others saw Him: believers who forgave quickly. Who apologized first. Who served without recognition. Who loved without conditions. Who built bridges instead of walls. Who valued unity over winning arguments. Who showed the world a love that was patient, kind, humble, honest and real.
People are watching, but not to criticize everything you do. Many are watching because they’re searching for hope. They’re trying to figure out whether Jesus is real by watching the people who claim to follow Him. What if your life became the proof someone needed? What if your love and the way you live became the invitation someone couldn’t ignore? The greatest cause of new Christians can be Christians…people who confess Jesus with their lips and confirm that confession with a life shaped by agape love. And you get to be a part of that.
About this Plan

This 21-day devotional offers a Scripture-centered journey into the biblical meaning of love. Through daily Bible readings and short reflections, you’ll explore four key expressions of love—storge (affection), philia (friendship), eros (covenant passion), and agape (self-giving love)—and how God uses each to shape our lives. Beginning with the question “What is love?” and moving toward practical challenges like loving difficult people, this devotional is designed to transform your heart, strengthen your relationships, and deepen your understanding of God’s loving nature. It’s an invitation to experience God’s love more fully and reflect it faithfully to others.
