Addressing Our Affections

DAY 1 OF 5

When it comes to our walk with God, many things can get in the way. While we often attempt to blame the devil for these obstacles, there is something far more subtle than the enemy—something that often prevents deeper intimacy with God: our affections.

Our affections are not just our emotions. They are our inclinations. Our inner pull. What we naturally drift toward when no one is correcting us. And if we are not careful to address them, we can slowly begin to convince ourselves that these desires are from God—that we are simply “following our heart”—when in reality, our heart may be following something else.

This drift rarely happens all at once. Over time, the world, social media, societal norms, and entertainment begin to influence us more than the Word of God, quietly reshaping our desires. Even good things, when left unchecked, can move us out of proper order. That is why it is so important to regularly examine our hearts and submit every desire to the Lord.

Over the next few days, we will begin addressing our affections and learning how to surrender them to God. As we embark on this journey, take time to pray and ask the Lord to reveal any affections that may have slowly taken His place in your heart.

Prayer: Lord, help me identify the affections I have placed above You. Help me surrender these things to You as they are revealed. I trust You with my desires and know that what You have is best for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

About this Plan

Addressing Our Affections

Addressing Our Affections is a five-day devotional designed to help believers examine what truly has their hearts. Through Scripture, reflection, and honest self-examination, this devotional invites readers to identify disordered loves, release misplaced desires, and rediscover what it means to abide in Christ. Rather than calling for more effort or spiritual activity, it points us toward deeper surrender and delight in the Lord—where our affections are reordered, and our hearts are drawn back to Him.
