The Way: Discipleship

DAY 28 OF 30

From David Dobbie

Empowered to Go

EQUIPPED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Have you ever had a moment in your life when you felt completely unprepared for something important? Maybe it was the time you stepped into a new job, when you became a parent, or even before embarking on the holiday of a lifetime. It’s that mix of excitement and fear as if you’re standing on the edge of something bigger than yourself. We’ve all had times when we feel the weight of responsibility sitting squarely on our shoulders, wondering if we have what it takes. Still, in moments like that, it’s as if a gentle voice stirs inside us, reminding us that we were made to walk with a strength beyond our own.

In the Bible, the disciples faced a similar moment of uncertainty. Jesus had risen from the dead, but before returning to Heaven, he gave them a mission that was far beyond their own abilities. But instead of expecting them to rely on their own strength, he promised divine help. As Jesus explained the coming of the Holy Spirit, he reminded the disciples that God’s power would go with them. As it says in Acts 1:8a (NLT), “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere…”

Acts 1:8 is a reminder that God never calls us to something without also empowering us for it. The disciples weren’t spiritual superheroes – these guys were ordinary people just like you and me, with fears, doubts and limitations. But God wasn’t waiting for them to become perfect or polished. Instead, he filled them with his Spirit so they could step into a mission bigger than anything they could accomplish alone.

The same is true for us today. God doesn’t expect us to carry our calling in our own strength. He invites us to rely on his power, his Spirit working in and through us. When we feel inadequate, he offers boldness. When we feel small, he offers his presence. When we step out in faith, even in small ways, he meets us with the power we lack.

This means that today we can face conversations, decisions and challenges knowing we’re not walking into them alone. The good news is that God’s Spirit equips us to love, to speak, to serve and to step forward even when we feel weak. All he asks is that we’re willing to go where he leads and trust that his strength will meet us there.

Reflection

  • Where do you feel God nudging you to step out in faith, even though you might be feeling unprepared?
  • What truth from Acts 1:8 can strengthen you this week?
  • What small, Spirit-led action can you take today to be a witness of God’s love?

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for reminding me that I don’t walk alone. I ask today that you help me to trust your Spirit’s power instead of my own strength. Give me the courage to step into the places you’re calling me and remind me that you are with me in every moment. Lord, empower me today to be a witness of your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan

The Way: Discipleship

Discipleship is a grace-empowered, lifelong journey of following Jesus and being formed into his likeness in heart, mind, and action. It involves intentional practices that nurture personal holiness, missional living, and love for others. Rooted in community, disciples grow through shared wisdom, encouragement, and example. Discipleship is not just about learning but about living out the way of Jesus in everyday life.
