The Way: Discipleship

DAY 6 OF 30

From Nathan Casey

Just Do It!

REAL FAITH IS IN THE RIDING

To my wife’s frustration, I’ve always had lots of little hobbies… actually, they’re more like little obsessions. When something catches my interest, I go all in. I read articles, scroll forums, binge YouTube videos, compare reviews… Don’t judge me, I know, it’s a bit much.

One of these obsessions that keeps coming back around is motorbikes. I’ve learned everything: which models are best value, how to maintain them, what looks the coolest, which is the fastest, what to buy first, what never to buy… Honestly, if you’re looking to buy a bike, give me a call!

There’s just one tiny detail I need to let you know: I’ve never actually ridden one. And do you know what’s more fun, thrilling and rewarding than knowing about motorbikes? RIDING them. (Apparently!)

Here’s the thing – we can know all the facts, study all the theory, sound like an expert… but until we actually do it, we’re missing the point. James says our faith can be the same.

James, the brother of Jesus, calls this out directly. He’s writing to followers of Jesus who love hearing and learning about God’s Word – but haven’t taken it for a ride yet.

James 1:22 (NLT) says:

But don’t just listen to God’s Word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

James isn’t being harsh; he invites us to experience the full thrill of living out God’s truth – not merely studying it. Faith is meant to be lived, not just researched. You can read every book, highlight every verse, binge every sermon ever preached – but the real adventure starts when you actually get on and ride. If you don’t, you’ll never experience the full, rich, satisfying life God has for you (John 10:10).

Obedience is where transformation happens. It’s where faith stops being head knowledge and starts becoming real life. When you forgive that person, when you choose humility, when you step out to serve, when you love someone who’s hard to love – that’s where the Spirit of God shows up.

God isn’t waiting for us to have perfect understanding before we act. He’s waiting for us to trust him enough to take the next step. And the good news is that he doesn’t leave us to just do it in our own strength; he has given us a helper! The Holy Spirit empowers, guides, strengthens, and gives us the courage to take the next step.

Don’t settle for being an ‘expert’ in theory. Real faith is in the riding. That’s where the joy is.

Reflection

  • Where have you been learning about faith but not yet living it out?
  • What’s one step of obedience God is nudging you towards today?
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to help you move from hearing to doing this week!

Prayer

Lord, thank you that your Word is alive and meant to be lived out. Help me to not just know the truth but to walk it out. Give me the courage to take the next step, even when it stretches me. Help me move from theory to practice. Holy Spirit, help me! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan

The Way: Discipleship

Discipleship is a grace-empowered, lifelong journey of following Jesus and being formed into his likeness in heart, mind, and action. It involves intentional practices that nurture personal holiness, missional living, and love for others. Rooted in community, disciples grow through shared wisdom, encouragement, and example. Discipleship is not just about learning but about living out the way of Jesus in everyday life.
