The Thief of Joy

Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV)

[11] I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learnt to be content whatever the circumstances. [12] I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learnt the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. [13] I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

What is stealing your joy?

The things you want that you don't have? The things you have that you don't want?

Really, the answer to this question is neither of the two. A major thief of joy is DISCONTENTMENT. Love, joy, and peace—amongst other Fruit of the Spirit—are often absent in a discontented heart.

"I've learnt to be content in every circumstance" (Philippians 4:12)... is a statement by the Apostle Paul (who experienced both abundance and lack) that we may have underrated. We are mostly preoccupied with the pursuit of our legitimate needs and wants that we overlook "contentment of heart".

But may I remind you today that our needs, as humans, are insatiable? Meaning we can have everything and still want more.

Let's be clear, the pursuit of “more” in itself is not discontentment. As a matter of fact, it is legitimate to have pursuits. Contentment doesn't mean settling for less in life. However, it is very easy for discontentment to become the driving force of these legitimate pursuits. Remember, the devil is always on a rampage. And so, even the slightest presence of the works of the flesh, such as jealousy, ingratitude, covetousness, and self-pity, serves as an invitation to him to seize the day. This is why we have to "guard our hearts with all diligence... (Proverbs 4:23)". We can't afford to harbour the wrong feelings or emotions for a nanosecond. We must always be on alert, conscious of our state of mind and heart.

Contentment is a state of being that involves accepting and appreciating life as it is while finding peace and joy in it. It's a mindset that requires effort and self-awareness to cultivate. It is not about ignoring problems or being complacent but about finding inner calm and fulfilment despite life's challenges. Simply put, contentment is the short route to progress.

In case this hits home, take a closer look at your heart today. Without condemnation, repent of any discontentment with your current situation and move forward with a deliberate commitment to stay content, no matter what.

Action Step: Refuse grumbling and complaining today. Instead, confess: “I am joyful and grateful for who God has made me in Christ Jesus, what He has given me in Christ Jesus, and where He has destined me to be in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer: Father, thank You for all You have given me in Christ. I lay down every comparison, complaint, and ungodly desire before You. Fill my heart with contentment and help me find lasting joy in You alone. In Jesus' name. Amen.
