Unlearning Prayer

DAY 6 OF 6

BECOMING FLAME

KEY VERSE

“And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

The goal was never a better prayer life. The goal was always a transformed life; one that has been so shaped by the presence of God that the distinction between “prayer time” and “everything else” starts to dissolve.

The Desert Father Abba Lot, stretched out his hands, and his fingers were like ten lamps of fire. That’s an arresting picture of the destination prayer draws us toward, being aflame with the life of God.

Rowan Williams calls this being “at the disposal” of God and neighbour. The person who prays, in the end, simply becomes available. And availability — showing up, staying, remaining present — is what love looks like in practice.

THE PRACTICE

Choose one ordinary task today — answering emails, washing up, walking the dog. Before you begin, pause and ask: “How can this action be an act of love for God?”

Do the task. That’s the prayer. Repeat tomorrow, and the day after.

About this Plan

Unlearning Prayer

Prayer is strange territory. Some of us arrive here with decades of practice and still aren’t sure we’re doing it right. Some of us arrive carrying a long silence; years where prayer felt hollow, or pointless, or just absent. And some of us arrive simply curious. Drawing on the gritty wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers and on the profound theological insight of Rowan Williams, these six devotions are about one thing: experimenting. Letting go of the habits, expectations, and performance anxieties and embracing some new ways and allowing space for a new openness to God to grow.
