It Is WrittenSample

Not What You Write...But What God Already Wrote
Every January, we write things. Goals. Resolutions. Vision boards. Plans for health, finances, and the future. There's nothing wrong with vision—God loves intentionality.
But here's the question that frames this entire devotional:
What if the most important thing about your year is not what you write...but choosing to believe what God has already written?
Before January 1st showed up on your calendar, God had already spoken over your life. Your forgiveness, identity, and future were already written, and your victory secured. And if we don't start the year anchored in what God has said, we'll spend the year reacting to what life says.
That's why the wilderness story of Jesus matters so much. When Jesus steps into the wilderness, the enemy doesn't show up in an obvious way. No horns. No pitchfork. He comes with words. Suggestions. Logic. Something sounding reasonable. "If You are the Son of God... turn these stones into bread." Translation: "Interpret your season through your hunger. Prove yourself. Perform for certainty."
But Jesus doesn't debate, spiral, or negotiate with the thought. He responds with one phrase, shutting the whole thing down: "It is written." These simple words carry the authority and truthfulness of Scripture—God’s Word.
He's not trying to sound spiritual; the Word had already shaped how He thought. Jesus knew what God said, so He could immediately recognize what God didn't say. That's discernment. And discernment isn't a gift you suddenly receive in a crisis—it's a muscle you develop before the crisis comes.
Here's the danger as we start a new year: the loud voices say, "This year will be the same. You'll never change. You're behind. God is disappointed." Those thoughts feel personal, but they're not original. Jesus called the enemy the father of lies. And lies don't face confrontation from positivity or willpower. Lies get confronted by Word power—the written power of what God has already said.
Second Timothy 3:16 reminds us that all scripture, God’s word, is inspired by God, and it teaches us what is true, reveals what is wrong, corrects us, and directs us to do what is right.
Acts 20:32 says the Word of His grace can build you up and give you an inheritance. Not the word of pressure or self-condemnation. Your feelings are real, but not reliable. They are indicators, not authorities. They indicate what's happening inside you, but they do not get to decide what's true.
And then comes one of the most freeing truths to carry into the year: Grace was written before the battle began. Jesus wasn't quoting Scripture to earn victory; He quoted Scripture because victory was already His. Many people start a new year believing God is watching to see how they do. But grace isn't God's reaction to failure—grace was written before failure ever began.
Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those in Christ. And Colossians 2:14 says Jesus canceled the record of charges against us. You don't have to walk into a brand-new year carrying paperwork God already destroyed. God does not remember what He’s already canceled. If God canceled it, you don't have to keep carrying it.
So yes—write plans. Dream. Build.
But start here: trust what God already wrote. What God has written cannot be undone.
Prayer:
Father, thank you for Your grace already spoken over my life. Teach me to recognize what is written so I can reject what isn’t. When voices of fear, shame, and accusation rise—anchor me in Your truth. I refuse to carry what You have cancelled, nor remember what You have forgotten. I believe and receive the word of grace that builds me up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection Questions:
- What "voices" speak the loudest over you at the start of a new season?
- What lie(s) do you carry that God never wrote?
- What Scripture promise do you need to start repeating to yourself as your foundation this year?
- Where are your feelings acting like an authority instead of an indicator?
- What would change if you began each day grounded in "It is written?"
