Learning to Live WiselySample

Day 3: Humble Listening
As we seek to live wisely, we discover an important truth that the Bible repeatedly emphasizes: wisdom grows in a heart that is willing to learn. No one is born knowing everything, and the journey of life is filled with opportunities to grow. For this reason, Scripture presents humility and a willingness to receive instruction as essential elements of a wise life.
The book of Proverbs expresses this idea very directly: “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds to counsel is wise” (Proverbs 12:15 New King James Version). This contrast reveals two different attitudes toward life: the fool believes he is always right and is unwilling to listen to others, while the wise person recognizes the need for counsel and is willing to learn.
In the Bible, wisdom is deeply connected to humility. This may seem contrary to how the world often understands success or knowledge, where self-sufficiency and independence are highly valued. However, the biblical perspective reminds us that acknowledging our limitations is actually a crucial step toward growth. Proverbs also states, “The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise.” (Proverbs 15:31, New King James Version). The word “rebukes” can be understood as correction or warning, which, although not always comfortable to receive, is used by God to guide us onto a better path.
The author of Hebrews reminds believers that the Lord’s discipline is not a sign of abandonment, but of care. He corrects because He loves us and desires that we share in a life that reflects His character. When we accept correction with humility, we truly allow God to begin shaping our hearts, learning to recognize our mistakes and change direction when necessary. This process is an essential part of developing a wise life.
It is also important to remember that God uses different means to teach us. At times, He speaks through His Word; at other times, through the counsel of spiritually mature people; and sometimes through the very circumstances of life. In each of these moments, the Lord is at work, lovingly guiding us toward a wise life. Living wisely does not mean we will never make mistakes—even those can be used by God to teach us. A teachable heart remains sensitive to God’s voice and open to the guidance He provides.
Today, we can ask ourselves whether we are cultivating that humble attitude that allows wisdom to grow. It is when we receive the Lord’s instruction and listen to wise counsel that our lives begin to reflect His will more and more.
Reflection Questions
- Am I willing to listen to the counsel and correction of others with humility?
- Is there a recent situation where God may have been trying to teach me something?
- How can I cultivate a more teachable heart before the Lord?
Prayer
Lord, I recognize that I often struggle to accept correction or admit my mistakes. Today, I ask You to form in me a humble and teachable heart. Help me to hear Your voice through Your Word, through wise counsel, and through the circumstances of life. Guide me to grow in wisdom and to walk closer to You each day. Amen.
About this Plan

The Bible teaches that true wisdom is not merely about accumulating knowledge, but about embracing a whole way of life. In this 5-day devotional plan, we will explore how biblical wisdom transforms our decisions, our words, and the way we relate to others. Through the book of Proverbs and other passages of Scripture, you will discover how to apply God’s wisdom in your daily life.
