The Executive Calling

DAY 1 OF 7

The Wilderness Was Always Part of the Plan

There is a detail in the Exodus story that most people read past without stopping.

When God led Israel out of Egypt, the Bible says He deliberately did not take them by the shortest route. Exodus 13:17 tells us plainly — God said, if they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt. So He led them the long way. Through the wilderness. On purpose.

This is not a minor logistical footnote. It is a theological statement about how God develops leaders.

The wilderness was not a detour from the plan. It was the plan. God knew exactly where He was taking them. He knew the destination. He knew the distance. And He chose the longer, harder, more stripping route — not because He was indifferent to their discomfort but because He was deeply invested in their formation.

The same is true for you.

If you are in a season that feels longer than it should be — if the vision is clear but the progress is slow, if the calling is real but the doors seem unusually quiet — resist the temptation to interpret the wilderness as evidence of divine absence. The cloud that led Israel was not absent in the desert. It was most visible there.

God leads in the wilderness. He speaks in the wilderness. He forms in the wilderness what cannot be formed anywhere else. The question is not whether you will pass through it. The question is whether you will allow it to complete its work.

Reflection:

What wilderness season are you currently in? What might God be forming in you that could only be formed here?

Prayer:

Lord, I confess that I have sometimes mistaken Your formation for Your absence. Teach me to recognise Your hand in the hard seasons. Give me the patience to let the wilderness do what only the wilderness can do. I trust that You know the destination — and I trust the route You have chosen to get me there. Amen.

About this Plan

The Executive Calling

Every leader called to Kingdom impact will pass through the wilderness. Not once, but in seasons, in cycles, in the quiet stretches between one breakthrough and the next. This seven-day plan draws from the journey of Israel through six distinct wilderness seasons and applies their lessons to the modern executive, entrepreneur, and marketplace leader. If you are building something significant for God and wondering why the journey feels harder than the vision promised, then this plan was written for you.
