Real Love Is Loyal
Ever notice how a “harmless” flirtation or fantasy can feel small in the moment but easily grow? The 7th Commandment takes that danger seriously: “You shall not commit adultery” (Exod. 20:14).
This isn’t merely about personal sexual ethics. Today’s video explains how God is calling people to protect all marriage relationships and, therefore, protect community flourishing. In Leviticus 20:10, adultery even carries the same penalty as murder. Why such high stakes?
From creation’s beginning, God intended a husband and wife to “become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24). Adultery doesn’t just break a rule; it tears apart a union that God has formed. God wants the world to know that his bond with people is unbreakable, so he intends for marriages to reflect that same unbreakable bond.
Proverbs says chasing another person’s spouse is like being an ignorant ox led to slaughter (7:21-23) and that anyone who walks this road has no sense and ruins their own life (6:32). The prophets go even further. They envision marriage in terms of a covenant (Mal. 2:14) and compare it to Israel’s relationship with God (Isa. 54:4-8). The point: Real love is loyal. God’s incorruptible love can be the model for our human faithfulness.
Jesus pushes the command even deeper. In Matthew 5:27-28, he says adultery begins long before the bedroom—it begins in the heart (see also Matt. 15:19). Turning people into fantasies or objects of desire already crosses the line, because it replaces love with use.
So this command carries deeper wisdom. It’s not just about rejecting adultery but also about protecting promises and honoring people by avoiding flirtations and fantasies.
The invitation is simple. Guard your heart, honor your commitments, and treat others as people to love, not objects to consume.
Reflection Question:
- Consider “You shall not commit adultery” in the reverse: “Do honor the marriages of all.” How can you privately or publicly honor God by respecting the marriages in your community?
