Leading Like It Matters
Moses had just led the most dramatic rescue mission in history, the exodus from Egypt. And now, in the desert, he was drowning.
Every morning, people lined up to bring their disputes to him. He sat from dawn until dusk, serving as judge for an entire nation. The intention was noble but the method was unsustainable. He was one man trying to carry what was designed to be shared.
His father-in-law, Jethro, saw it immediately. And God, working through Jethro's practical wisdom, gave Moses a new vision of leadership: delegate the work to capable, trustworthy people. Reserve your energy for what only you can do. Let others carry what they are equipped to carry.
What strikes us in this passage is Jethro's reason. He didn't frame it in terms of efficiency or productivity. He said: if you do this, "all these people will go home satisfied." Biblical leadership, at its core, is about the flourishing of the people being led.
God cares about leadership, because God cares about people. So much so that in the New Testament, leadership is listed as a spiritual gift alongside prophecy and teaching (Romans 12:8). This is not leadership as dominance or status. It is leadership as sacrifice, stewardship, and service.
Every Christ-follower who leads a team, a department, a family or a small group, carries this calling. Leading with excellence is honouring to God. How you develop people, delegate responsibility, give feedback, share credit, and absorb pressure is a spiritual practice.
Moses needed a Jethro, someone outside himself to show him what he couldn't see. The best leaders know they need the same.
Reflection Questions
- Jethro's goal for Moses was that "all these people will go home satisfied." How does that definition of leadership challenge or reshape the way you think about your own role as a leader?
- Moses' exhausting leadership style showed his willingness to sacrifice, but it wasn't sustainable. What sacrifices are you making for those you lead right now? Are any of these sacrifices actually serving your people well?
- Who is your "Jethro", the person who gives you honest, outside perspective on how you are leading? If you don't have one, why not?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that leadership is harder than it looks, and it is easier to do badly than well. Thank you that you care not just about what gets done, but about the people doing it. Please help me to lead in a way that leaves those around me more capable, more equipped, and feeling more valued than I found them. Please give me the humility to receive honest input, the wisdom to delegate well, and the courage to sacrifice for those in my care. Amen.
