Romans: Practical RighteousnessSample

WEEK 6
LIFE IN THE SPIRIT
Romans 8 is not just as a list of comforts, but a victory march. Note that the "therefore" in verse 1 connects back to the struggle of Romans 7. The "verdict" of the future - that we are God's righteous people - has been brought into the present. This chapter is about how the Spirit makes what was "impossible for the Law" a reality for the believer.
Section 1: Spirit of life (8:1–11)
- The Law of the Spirit vs. the Law of Sin: The "Spirit of Life" isn't just a feeling; it’s a new governing principle. Just as gravity is a law, the Spirit is a "new force" that breaks the downward pull of sin and death.
- The rescue of the physical: The Spirit isn't just for "souls." Because the Spirit of the God who raised Jesus lives in you, He will also give life to your mortal bodies. The Spirit is the down payment on the physical resurrection of the believer.
Section 2: Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:12–17)
- From slaves to heirs: Note the Exodus imagery here. Israel was called God’s "son" when they left Egypt. Now, the Spirit leads us out of the "slavery" of the flesh. We don't cry out in fear like slaves to a master, but with the intimate "Abba" of a child.
- The proof of suffering: Note the paradox: being an "heir" with Christ includes sharing in His suffering. In the Roman world, adoption was a legal transfer of status and debt. By the Spirit, our "debt" to the flesh is canceled, and we take on the family "business" of cross-bearing and eventual glory.
Section 3: Spirit of glory (Romans 8:18–37)
- The groaning of creation: Glory is not just a shiny light, but authority. The world is currently in labour, waiting for the children of God to be revealed. The Spirit groans within us, signalling that God is not finished with the physical world; He is going to set it free through His glorified people.
- The interceding Spirit: When we are at our weakest—not knowing how to pray amidst our groaning—the Spirit intercedes for us. The Spirit prays within the heart of the believer, aligning our deepest pains with God’s redemptive purposes.
CONCLUSION
Inseparable love
Romans 8 concludes with the "Triumphant Song" of verses 31–37. This is Paul's victory shout against any power that tries to separate us from God. The Spirit’s work, from life to adoption to glory, culminates in the absolute certainty that we are "more than conquerors" because the judge of the world is the one who died for us.
CALL TO ACTION
Consider how you can live victoriously because of what Jesus did for you on the Cross? How can you learn to cry "Abba Father" and live as a son and daughter of the Most High? Write down areas of your life where you have been living as a slave and not an heir, and bring them before the Lord, asking Him to speak into these areas and help you to live out the righteousness you have received in Jesus.
