Isus i-a răspuns: „Prima poruncă este aceasta: «Ascultă, Israel! Iahve, Dumnezeul nostru, este unul singur»; și: «Să iubești pe Dumnezeul tău numit Iahve – cu toată inima ta, cu tot sufletul tău, cu toată mintea ta și cu toată energia ta.» Aceasta este prima poruncă. Iar a doua (ca importanță) este următoarea: «Să-L iubești pe cel de lângă tine ca pe tine însuți.» Nu există cerințe mai importante decât acestea.”

Și Isus i-a răspuns: Prima dintre toate poruncile este: Ascultă, Israel; Domnul Dumnezeul nostru este un singur Domn; Și să iubești pe Domnul Dumnezeul tău cu toată inima ta și cu tot sufletul tău și cu toată mintea ta și cu toată tăria ta; aceasta este prima poruncă. Și a doua este asemănătoare, adică aceasta: Să iubești pe aproapele tău ca pe tine însuți. Nu este altă poruncă mai mare decât acestea.

Să-L iubești pe Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, cu toată inima ta, cu tot sufletul tău, cu tot cugetul tău și cu toată puterea ta“. Aceasta este cea dintâi poruncă. A doua este: „Să-l iubești pe semenul tău ca pe tine însuți“. Nu există altă poruncă mai mare decât acestea.
