În învățătura pe care le-o dădea, Isus le zicea: „Păziți-vă de cărturari, cărora le place să umble în haine lungi și să le facă lumea plecăciuni prin piețe. Ei umblă după scaunele dintâi în sinagogi și după locurile dintâi la ospețe; casele văduvelor le mănâncă și fac rugăciuni lungi de ochii lumii. O mai mare osândă va veni peste ei.”

Și le-a spus în doctrina lui: Păziți-vă de scribii cărora le place să umble cu robe lungi și le plac saluturile în piețe, Și scaunele din față în sinagogi și locurile de onoare la ospețe; Care devorează casele văduvelor și de ochii lumii fac rugăciuni lungi; aceștia vor primi mai mare damnare.

Învățătura lui Isus conținea pentru ascultătorii Săi și următorul avertisment: „Feriți-vă de experții în lege(a mozaică) și de scribi! Lor le place să umble în locuri publice îmbrăcați cu haine lungi, așteptând aprecieri și elogii din partea oamenilor. Le face plăcere să stea pe primele scaune din sinagogi și să ocupe cele mai bune locuri când se organizează mese festive. Ei sunt cu atât mai vinovați și vor fi cu atât mai sever condamnați, cu cât fac în mod ipocrit rugăciuni lungi în public, dar pe de altă parte abuzează de casele văduvelor.”
