A Just Society with Provision for All

One of the phrases often said in the church is “Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.” Do you ever stop to wonder what this might look like lived out?

In Jeremiah 22, we see Jeremiah delivering a harsh warning from the Lord to the royals ruling over Judah. He warned them about their corrupt ways, because they were self-seeking and blind to the needs of the marginalized.

King Josiah let the warning transform his behavior. “He did what was right and just… he defended the cause of the poor and needy.” He was a changed man who gave concern to the poor. And to this, the Lord said, "Is that not what it means to know me?" 

It's as if God is saying, If you know me and love me, you are going to care for those in need—those who can't defend themselves and those who are abused and neglected by others. Caring for the poor is what we do in my family.

King Josiah brought heaven to earth. 

We also see heaven coming to earth with King Solomon. Scripture tells us that the people were as numerous as the sand on the seashore, and they were very content. Each home had its own fig tree and vine—delicious food and drink for all! There were no hungry people. No need for soup kitchens or food banks. Throughout Solomon's lifetime, the people lived in abundance and safety, and there was peace on all his borders. 

Sadly, this is not what many experience today. People are starving under famine. Innocent children are being orphaned because of war. There has never been a greater need for Christians to do what they can to bring heaven to earth. 

Reflection

What a rare thing, to find a picture of a land where there is no one in need, where everyone has enough and lives at peace with each other!

In his earlier days, Solomon was a King who, having been so blessed by God, sought to honor Him and follow His ways, making sure there was provision for everyone. What would the world look like if we were as wise?

Prayer

You are a big-hearted God, and I want to be like you. Give me a heart to care for the abused and neglected. I pray that people would see in me a family likeness to you. 

Lord, we seek to honor you and your ways. We ask that there would be a growing concern to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, so that all have enough for their needs. Amen.
