DAY 2 – THE STORIES BEHIND THE BOOKS
The title of this reading series, Delve Into The Old Testament, expresses the hope and expectation that when readers have greater knowledge about the Bible, they won’t find it so difficult to understand, and they’ll enjoy it much more.
In other reading plans, we’ll be exploring the stories behind each of the books in the Bible. These will give you valuable background on what kinds of people wrote them, what was going on in their lives and communities at the time, and how their words helped encourage God’s people to meet the challenges of their day in a way that’s become an inspiration to people in all places and times.
If you’re going to read through a book of the Bible in your personal devotions, if you’re part of a group that’s going to read and discuss a book together, or if your church is going to have a sermon series or Sunday school class on a biblical book, you’ll find it helpful to read the background stories first.
In this plan, we offer a broader introduction to the Old and New Testaments. We hope this will give you a feel for the big story behind the Bible as a whole and a desire to find out more about when and why the various books were written. When you get the big picture this way, you’ll find that you can truly read the Bible smarter, not harder.
One person who encountered the stories behind the biblical books in these reading plans described how this helped him understand one part of the Bible in particular: “Following Paul’s letters has always been confusing to me. Even taking classes like New Testament Survey didn’t help clarify this. [But] the background information for each book . . . has really helped me get a more global view of the early days of the church.”
You’ll find that the same will be true for other parts of the Bible, and for the Bible as a whole, as you learn the stories behind its books, whether you read them one at a time, here and there as your interest directs, or whether you go through all of the reading plans.
