SAYING 13: CORRECT IN LOVE

As a parent, you can often wonder what is the ‘right’ thing to do and it can paralyze you from making any decision at all.

This past week, my son didn’t want to take his nap. A lot of times, parents fight the same fights every day and nap time is prime battleground. Honestly, I wondered, "Well maybe he’s not tired! And gosh, it would be easier if he just stayed up then using my last bit of energy to get him to bed."

I texted my husband about the situation and he simply replied with, “You have to show him who’s boss.” In that moment I realized I was running away from discipline because I was tired and not taking into account what was best for my child and his growth. I made sure my son got back into his bedroom and that he knew this was his last warning. This time he went to bed and of course, fell asleep in minutes... I guess he was tired after all.

I want my son to grow up knowing that decisions for him are always geared toward his benefit, even when he doesn’t agree. (No kid ever thinks they need a nap! Or to brush their teeth! Or to wash their clothes! The list goes on.) I want to make sure I don’t settle for less because I didn’t care or have the energy to bring correction when it’s needed. Character is not created in one moment in someone’s life, but in the small moments as they grow up. I have to remember it’s not just about a nap but rather I’m teaching him how to respect me and other people in leadership, which in turn will shape him into the man God wants him to become!

 ACTION

If you’re a parent, a nanny, or teacher who works with our young ones - never run away from correcting because it could affect what type of adult they become in the future. Make sure to have people in your life you trust, who you can call or text to keep you accountable, and also encourage you - because you'll need a lot of it. God has entrusted you with the children He loves most, so take it with honor that you have been trusted with such a role.

PRAYER

Pray for God to give you wisdom in how to discipline and give you strength to do so, even when you’re tired!
