SAYING 25: PROTECT THE INNOCENT AND RESCUE EVERYONE YOU CAN
I remember visiting Haiti in 2009 not long after the island had been hit by a catastrophic earthquake. I traveled with a small team of young people to partner in providing aid with local Haitian churches. I was profoundly struck by how full of life and joy all of the churches were; many of the members had lost their homes and not much was left of their church buildings. Still, their worship gatherings were electric, people dancing and singing in the aisles.
It had a huge impact on how I view the problems in my life. What had once seemed monumental now seemed so...small. When I face challenges, I try to remember the spirits of the people I worked with during that trip; I know that however difficult the challenges in my life may be, someone somewhere is facing something a lot harder. Instead of focusing on my own struggle, I could redirect my energy to someone who could use my help and we could find joy together.
Who can you help? Who is facing something even harder than what you're facing? Sometimes the best way to overcome our own issues and problems is by focusing our energy on helping someone else. Sometimes when we face difficulties, what we really need is a change in perspective. Discover the freedom that comes from serving someone else. Find peace by bringing peace to others. Learn the beauty of finding your life by losing it for someone else.
