Love God, Lose Weight - Christmas Devotion預覽
God's Gift of Patience
Devotion
I'm in constant need of reminders that I am to be patient with myself. I'm constantly getting mad at myself for procrastinating; for not measuring up to an impossible standard that I set for myself; for not having enough willpower; for eating too much; for wasting too much time on the internet when I could be going for a walk, and I could go on and on.
And then I read the Word, and I see how patient God is with us. His patience lovingly beckons us back to Him. He gently guides us to trust Him and await His direction, which contrasts with my approach.
God's Word teaches me that patience is grounded in love. Because He loves me and has no other agenda, he can be patient with me. Then I see my impatience, and I realize it's because I have an agenda. I want results fast. I crave worldly possessions like money and status. I seek fulfillment in things that don't satisfy me. This is contrary to how God operates.
Reflect
"The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." 2 Pet. 3:9 ESV
"But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness." Ps. 86:15 ESV
1. Reflect on God's purpose and intention to instill patience in you. How will it bless you?
2. What are you patiently (or impatiently) waiting on from the Lord? Talk to Him about it.
3. Thank God for loving you enough not to give you what you want or when you want it but in His perfect timing.
Love Challenge
Think of one task that you will accomplish today. Take a moment right now and pray for His Spirit of patience to help you accomplish it.
Worship and Prayer
"Lord, I pray that I would learn how to cultivate the spirit of patience. Please give me your perspective to focus on what matters most and not waste time striving for results in areas that don’t matter anyway. Help me understand that life is about practice, not perfection, so that I may gain a heart of patience and wisdom. As you are patient with me, please teach me how to be patient with myself. I rest in your peace and patience as you guide me towards your perfect and pleasing will. In Jesus' name. Amen."
