A Peacemakers 7 Day Devotional Part 3預覽
Scripture
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. (Matthew 10:29 ESV)
Thoughts:
This is Jesus speaking here; he is teaching the people about the right and wrong kinds of fear.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:28–31 ESV)
Jesus clearly does not give significance to those who can kill your body, your reputation, your ego, or your family name. Instead, he gives the highest value to God because of his authority to destroy soul and body in hell. The basis of Jesus’ statement is this: God knows you and values you. Think about that for a moment. God knows every hair on your head. He is intimately acquainted with all of your ways. While the wrong kinds of fear can wreak havoc on us, the antidote is to fear God—to have a strong reverence for him. Wait! What about verse 31 where Jesus says, “Fear not”? There he is talking about fearing man, an attitude that leads to many actions that will ruin relationships.
Application
So whom do you fear and respect most? People? Or God? Fear of people can control your life and cause you to make many unwise decisions. We all struggle with this at times. It may be as simple as not speaking up when we should, or it could be as intense as off-the-charts anxiety when we make a mistake in a relationship.
Here are two ways to address your fear of man: First, believe and proclaim that God knows you intimately. If you have trouble believing it, read in Psalm 139 how he knows everything about you. Second, believe and proclaim how much God values you. Isn’t it amazing? The creator of the universe values you and me!
Prayer
Lord, help me to have a deep reverence for you. I believe that you know me and I declare that you value me. Thank you. I need your help so that I won’t slide into fearing people… (Continue praying.)
