Winter Never Lasts Forever

Blush pink almond blossoms dotted the landscape as the onlookers slowly retreated down the hill. The brief Jerusalem spring was in the air, but in the hearts of Jesus’ disciples, it had to feel like the bleak winter all over again.

This man, who they believed could change the world, was gone. He had already changed their world. Life since walking with Him was so different, so fresh. There was a new energy they had never felt before.

And now? Now everything was lost. Or so it seemed.

Good Friday marks the day Jesus died on the cross, and the day we remember what He suffered on our behalf. This happened only a few days after the people celebrated His arrival in Jerusalem crying out Hosanna.

That spring weekend 2,000 years ago must have felt very much like winter. Winter in the hearts of the disciples.

Sometimes we have seasons in our lives that are like that: cold and confusing, with no comforting warmth and no end in sight. They feel like winter when all we want is sunshine, green grass, and warmer temperatures.

In those seasons, I’m reminded of a quote from “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis:

“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,

At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,

When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,

And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”

No matter what difficult seasons you and I walk through, we can be assured that winter won't last forever. How can we know that? Because the crucifixion wasn't the last chapter for Jesus. When He rose from the grave, death had to bow to Him.

Spring will come again.
