Bold Leaders Are: Content With Their Allotment

When Caleb was given his allotment of land in Joshua 14:13-15, he was given the area named Hebron as his inheritance. Hebron was a small mountain property in the land of Judah. Now Caleb could have easily looked at what was given to him and complained. He could’ve said, “Hey! Joshua and I should get all of the land! We were the only two that were faithful! I should get at least half, I deserve more than this!” He could have looked at all the towns around him and all the things he didn’t have. Instead, he responds by looking at what was given to him and says let’s go. Caleb chose to be content with what he was given and to be faithful with what was in his hands.

As leaders, we are called to be bold and part of being a bold leader is being content with our allotment.

It takes great boldness to be faithful and content with what is in our hands and trust God with what is in our hearts. In seasons when we don’t fully see the promise come to pass just yet, when our position may feel uncomfortable we can trust God that He will use it for our growth and for our good.

Bold leaders want to make a big difference, but it also takes great boldness to be content with the small beginnings. It can be easy to dismiss what has been given to us because it feels insignificant. It’s easy to want more even if we may not be ready for it. Don’t delay your destiny because you despise humble beginnings. You may be dissatisfied with what is in your hands or what has been entrusted to you. You may want more now. You may say “God! I can do more! I’m better than this!” The truth is you may not be ready for that place or that place may not even be ready for you yet.

The Bible encourages us in Luke 16:10, which reads, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.” God is encouraging us to be bold leaders; to remain boldly faithful despite delay and to remain boldly content despite small beginnings. It is in these seasons that we can truly depend on Jesus and trust Him that the best is yet to come.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  • What has God put in my hands?
  • What part of my life or my ministry do I need to be faithful and content with?
  • Am I focusing on what is in my hands or being consumed by what’s not?
  • Am I content with my allotment or stuck in a cycle of complaint?
  • Is God doing something in me while no one is around me?

PRAYER

Lord, I trust you. I trust you with and I thank you for what you have given me. Help me remain faithful in the little things as I grow to be faithful in the large ones. Help me be joyful and content with my allotment. Amen.
